Seriously, for the cost of the bush now (with the seal, total ~ a tenner ish) it saves in the long run!
... 'and here is one I happened to make earlier' Dave :-)

This is Volvo part # 235878, it is only £11.99 so I've ordered one (same part for the BW55 and AW70 - nothing much changed over the years).

I notice in your photos that you have used an ordinary nitrile seal, much the same as I've ordered for £4 Dave. The Volvo one is much more expensive (£25) and comes in a metal shroud:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295082123...cAAOSwzexiGfQx

... I can't see any point in paying an extra £20 for something that should do the same job, just because it will come in a plastic bag with Volvo written on it.

:-)

I bet if you phoned FRF Volvo and told them the part number, with discount it would be about half the price of that eBay one.

As you can see, this bush had also been spun by picking up on the shaft due to wear. This reduced the oil supply to it causing more premature wear.

New bush and seal fitted, ready for the back of the gasket paper to be sprayed with carpet glue prior ro setting the extension housing on it. Once the glue had dried, a ball pein hammer tapped out the bolt holes and a Stanley knife cut the larger holes.

Great explanation and photos there Dave

Maybe Luke, but the ordinary nitrile seal (which I'm almost certain will do the job) was only 20% of the cost of the eBay one :-).

I was reluctant to fit a steel shrouded seal in an aluminium housing for reasons of galvanic corrosion Alan. That said the previous one didn't have a metal shroud so it had presumably been done before and the standard seal performs perfectly well for the application.

If memory serves, i got the seal and bush from Essex Automatics, they had a website back then but it seems to have disappeared in favour of a Faceberk only link but either way, the Volvo spec box is the only one that used the metal shrouded seal and according to them, didn't offer any longevity or other benefits so the extra engineering for the shroud was simply to cost money.

Thank you for that, it rather confirms my view that there is absolutely no need to pay over the odds for a branded part when a generic one will do the job perfectly well for 20% of the cost. I almost always use generic bearings and seals, generally at 10 to 20% of the cost of OEM ones. I don't recall ever having an issue.

Do you remember whether that bushing was removed inwards or outwards (or maybe there is no lip so it doesn't make any difference?). I'm thinking it would be much better to press it out than use a drift, and so if it would go inwards then it might be easier to set up with my bearing press.

Another lovely day in paradise.

:-)

PS. And the answer is: it is pushed inwards - as is the replacement (so obviously there is no lip):

Fairlyt sure it can go either way Alan, there are holes in the bush to line up with oilways on the housing but that's radial alignment rather than axial.

If you're using a press, pushing the bush inwards to remove it would certainly be the better method than trying to push it out, unless my memory decieves me and it can only go in/out one way.
