Default Lack of power 740 GLE auto

Having driven 180 miles from near Brighton to near Tamworth I suffered loss of power viz. foot to the floor but only driving at 40. This did not occur gradually but all at once. Having parked at my destination (Alvecote Marina) on a slight slope when I came to move it it would not reverse at all, again even with the pedal to the floor. If this was a manual you would think it was a slipping clutch. The car starts as it should. The car is my daily driver and has been very reliable and regularly maintained by a old school Volvo mechanic. Any ideas?

Have you checked the ATF level? Also does the engine rev up as it should in N or P? What about in gear, is it just revving or is then engine speed still low?
