Agree 110% but work and commitments next weekend are against me FFS. I’ve messaged via Car & Classic asking some questions. If anyone knows the car on here please let me know 👍🏼

You have to smile at the irony. We've been debating the value of two £25K cars and come to the conclusion that they're probably overpriced and with some questions over their condition and that's what's needed is a cherished, privately advertised car that might reflect the true value... and then one pops up — in Scotland!

If I didn't already own one, and wanted a manual (which I don't), I'd be standing on his driveway pressing money in his hand right now

Go get it. If you don't, it'll be on a forecourt in England for £25K pretty soon

You’re right but I have work commitments all next weekend and away the following weekend which scuppers things somewhat! You couldn’t make it up. I have made contact with the seller awaiting a response. Fingers crossed!

(If it had been on the market last December, I'd have bought it lol)

Same! I don't understand the logic of considering seeing an overpriced car with a 10k premium but not taking a sensibly priced one seriously. For the 10k saving you could pay someone to look at it and send them to Scotland in a limo for god sake. Either you're serious about getting one or your not. I guess it'll be bought quickly by someone who is.

I would be exercising caution with this car. Whilst it has a clean MOT, here are the advisories from 2018.
- inner and outer sills corroded front to rear
- under flooring corroding
- brake and suspension components heavily corroded
- fuel filter corroded
- both front tyres wearing on inner edges

The last 2 are not of any concern but the first 3 most certainly are. If it's been a wire brush job, lick of rust killer and a coat of underseal, then that's a lot of stored up trouble.
I'd want to see bills, remedial actions and a damned good underbody poke round by a bodywork professional. Buyer beware I think in this case. All that glistens isn't necessarily gold.

Regards
John

Sounds like it's been parked in the sea.

Whist rotten 850s are rare if it is as bad as described by the MOT tester I'd be walking away - gul or not - unless you man knocked £10k off his asking price to cover the ball ache of stripping, welding, repainting & putting it all back together.

I'm with you Shinsplintz on this one. It's not so difficult to do a decent cosmetic job on rust that'll last perhaps 3 or 4 years but it WILL come to bite you at some point.
Also, I gather the MOT requires testers to use specific terminology. Surface rust and corrosion are two different issues, corrosion obviously being the more severe.
It might not be a dud if the work has been done on it properly rather than a surface job, hence my comment about getting a bodywork specialist to give it a very serious going over.

I did notice the MOT note regarding rust and did wonder how the rest of the car may be affected.
I always hesitate with cars from costal areas or Scotland due to the environment. One would hope the Scottish one was experiencing isolated rust issues but if the underside generally was rusty then you’d be constantly chasing it.
