XC60 R Design - 3 Children?
Hi,
I’m on my 4th Volvo at the moment, this time a V50 R Design. We’ve got three children, 12, 10 and 8, we’ve just sold our Discovery 4, which we owned for 5 years - the longest I’ve owned a car for! With only one child in a full size booster, one on a booster cushion and one just sitting on the back seat, can I squeeze them into a 12 / 13 / 14 reg XC60 R Design or will I have to go bigger - XC90/ Discovery again? Any help much appreciated. Main annoying point with my V50 is the squeaking seats…🙄 |

Fortunately for me not a problem that I've got at the moment, at 33,29 and 25 mine have their own cars and even give their old man a lift occasionally. Back when I was juggling kids in a car I used Incarsafetycentre in Milton Keynes, they've been around that long and are still going as far as I know, they have been specialising in child seats for years and know their stuff. Being in the Cotswolds you're not a million miles from MK but as you don't have the car yet I'd give them a call and see what advice they can give. I vaguely recall a similar thread to this a few years back and with modern cars and bulkier modern child seats getting three in the back is an issue but there was a system which was specially made to accommodate three children with isofix.

Hi David,
Thanks, I’ll try and follow up with them. It’s just after getting out of a Discovery I was keen for something smaller… Gone are the days of when I was young and seeing how many people you could cram in the back of a car… Howard |

Now you are stirring old memories, before we had children my wife and I helped out with a Boys' Brigade and Girls' Brigade marching band, when we went to events in the summer it was 'normal' to squeeze as many kids as possible in the back seat of a car without any hint of a seat belt, makes us cringe to think of it now.

Why not pop into a dealer and ask to try? Bring the kids and the car seat and booster. If you were nearer to South Wales, I’d offer you to pop in and give mine a go.

Quoted Dimensions for the rear internal widths :
V50 - 1374mm xc60 - 1403mm So according to that you've got an extra 29mm than you do in the V50, to give you an idea of sizing. Couldn't see figures for the Disco. Similar discussion on here previously, although with the younger children. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=221607 Other thing to bear in mind, if anyone says it will or won't work, is that a lot will depend on the actual boosters you are using, as I think even between seats suitable for similar ages, there can be quite a difference in width depending on how much padding is put on them. Only real way to tell is to try it. Go on Autotrader and find the closest xc60 for sale, and take the family. |

Thanks everyone!
The thing is we all survived without those seat belts etc and if you had an estate car…😮 The Discovery was great as it has three full size individual seats (we’ve been spoilt)! Agreed, the best option is to take the kids and boosters to see the local XC60 for sale… I’ll let you know how I get on but I’ve a feeling that I may miss out on an XC60… I don’t think an extra 29mm will cut it…. The other option is locating an XC60 R Design with the Family Pack with 2 built in boosters…🤔
