As the first major batch of snow in 2013 is now melting I though this would be interesting. For people who had winter tyres on, how did you find them? Did they get you through all the snow and ice when others struggled or did you find them over hyped? Let people know what you used and if you would recommend or tell people to avoid them.

For my part, I used Marangoni Meteo HP tyres for the first time. They are an Italian manufactured tyre that I bought online and had fitted by my local garage. They got me through all of the weather without a problem even when I saw others wheel spinning or sliding around. I did not feel as if I was on rails but I always felt safe and the car always found grip going forward, whether up or down hills where others visibly struggled.

It was my first year on winters but it felt the equal of my last two years which were spent in a 4wd with all season tyres. I am not worried if the snow returns and that is what I was looking for in a winter tyre.

Do you mean you don't like them? According to their site they are manufactured in Italy and surely they can not market them as new if they are remoulds.

What do you put on your car Daim? The point is that people can see this thread and get a comparison or theme on which tyres work well and which are only average.

Continental Winter Contact TS 830 P

Excellent tyres - Fantastic grip in all types of snow/slush and ice. Possess outstanding water clearing abilities. I would recommend them.

Currently am running 4 year old Barum Polaris II. Will be changing soon. They are good tyres though... The Barums...

Mine are relatively modest Nokian WR G2s, experements in no in previous years showed them very capable indeed n snow, ice and frost.

Hard to say they perfromed well in the snow last week, as I still need to spend the best part of a day cearing the lane with a shovel. The problem is, it's a long and hilly and unadopted lane, shared by a handful of neighbours who are generally somewhat older than me. I haven't the heart just drive cheerfully past, so the day after snow is spent mucking in with everybody else to dig ourselves out.

But the tyres fully fulfilled one purpose for which I bought them... which was allowing to venture out with full confidence I'd be able to get home again, even if fresh snow fell or the damp tarmac turned to ice while I was out.
