I think you will struggle to get more than 35mpg average out of an XC90 D5 in reality. Before I bought ours the salesperson assured me they regularly get 45mpg. I think they meant the instantaneous reading on a level run coming off the throttle!

I agree. 33-35mpg is about average I think.

Unfortunately, thats dreaming.

Over the last year and 22k miles my D5 205 (polestar) has returned 28mpg average. Mainly motorway work, but I dont have a light foot.

My best ever individual tank was 36mpg, and that was drafting lorries at a constant 60-70mph all the way from Leeds down to my house in The Netherlands. I drove it like a saint, feathered throttle all the way and coasting down hills etc.

A light-footed and careful driver is never likely to see more than about 36-37mpg from a tank on a D5 auto in my opinion. A manual car might eek 5mpg more.

The autobox combined with the AWD system really sap the mpg.

The pre dpf manuals do get over 40 on a run. My last trip from soton to notts at no more than 70 using cruise but very empty roads got me 41. I have tried drafting lorries before and I got up to 46 (and it was still rising) but then ran in to slow traffic.

Geartronic does too. Pre DPF of course.

Also remember diesel mpg improves with mileage and the pre DPF models generally have lots of miles on them now

Thanks guys looks like I'll have to put up with it then not enough reason to get rid of the car as I love the ride and smoothness of the geartronic.
This is my first xc90 with a d5 having just come from a d5se manualv70(52mpg) and having owned prior to that an s60d5 se manual(57mpg)you could say I love d5's (so much so we've just bought my missus a c30 d5 se lux geartronic( 52 mpg 0-60 in 7.4 rocket ship) (same 185 engine as mine!!)and you would be right.
Perhaps I was expecting too much re mph returns so I will just bite the bullet now and enjoy.
Still going to have pirelli verdies fitted will report back on mpg if different when done.

That's low for a pre DPF V70. I've driven 2 2002 Geartronic models one with 200k on the clock and one with 350k on the clock and they were both returning 63mpg on the run from Gatwick to Beckley

Thats excellent returns mate my point was how desirable the d5s are however we are changing this thread which was to discuss best tyres for xc90 I think it goes without saying how much hundreds of us on here have our own little treasured moments and love the d5.
Also it seems to back up the claims the older the d5 the more it returns.
