Default Chassies numbers ?

Hi Guys im doing a bit of reasearch into my 460 CD turbo. It all started off when I went to sort out the insurance and after giving all the details I was told that my car was suposed to be a manual even though it's an auto. After looking into this further on the internet I discovered that the 460 was relised in 1990 and in 1991 the models were reclasified with the 460 turbo becoming the 460 CD. Anyway im after a bit more info on this as in my 460's logbooks the vehicle details are as follows...

Model - 460 CD AUTO
Chassies number - 286001
Reg number - J226EYB
Delivery date - 21st May 1992

Now the bit im intrested in is the chassies number as it ends in 001. Is this of any significance? Could this car have been the first CD model? Or is it just one of those things. Anyone shed some light on this? Also whilst I think about it was the auto box on the early cars a rare option? Any ideas??

Surely the easiest way would be to contact your local dealer. They will have the VIN number in your system and that way can tell you exactly what you have.

If there is a discrepancy been your V5 and the Volvo info, Volvo needs to write to DVLA to explain a misstake has been made.

If memory serves me right, someone on this forum have had to do the same although I am not sure.

the 8th character of the VIN determines the transmission :
3 = Manual 5 = 4 speed auto

chassis no 286001
indicates it was 1992 volvo model year of which the first chassis no was 250200 and the last was 336999 . ( 1993 model year started at 33700)
so yours was probably made somewhere around the end of 1991 ...

Thanks Clan for that info regarding the vin number. Mine is XLBLX195ENC286001 so the vin plate ties up perfectly with the auto box.

Hy!
Does anybody knows which were the last chassis number for 440?
Mine is 735789 and i'm wondering how many were made after.
I found an interesting photo with the last 400 made... I think it's a 440. Enjoy!

Wink 440/460 Auto.

Hi,
I bought my 460 Gle Auto in 1992 when it was only a couple of months old.
I went to buy a brand new base model 460 Auto but found out that the Auto was only put on the CD and GLE at that time and they were not sure when the base models were getting it, so ended up buying my 460 gLE off volvo uk.
Not sure about the turbo turning into the Cd because they were all out in 1992, you could get the turbo with Glt spec as well .
Hope this may help you .

From what I remember, the 460 Turbo was badged "460 Turbo" for the first year or so, up to around 1992. This then changed to the "460 CD", I suspect because the 460 had a touch more snob appeal than the 440 Turbo.

The 460 CD then lost the turbo engine, in favour of the 2.0-litre unit but it remained the range topper. There was no such car as the 460 GLT (in the UK)until the second phase model; the 460 was more about luxury than being sporty.

I hope this helps.
