It all started years ago when I decided to turn my ‘lorry parking yard’ into a garden. Had a garage put up and then set about deciding what to do, so got in some ‘landscapers’ ‘designers‘ and ‘builder‘ types. Crikey the money they wanted to charge, so I figured, despite being useless at things like building I would do it myself for less than a quarter of the price….cue watching that Diarmuid Gavin , Alan Titchmarsh et al on TV over and over! Now I am the first to say I am the most useless when it comes to ‘building things’ so a pal of mine helped me (or rather the other way round) and we had a great time. Upshot was , it made him decide, as he was handy, he would be good at it long term and having been made redundant would be a good career in which to engage. I popped a few quid his way in appreciation and helped him set up for himself as a basic general gardener, maintainer, landscaper etc. He is now based Carlisle /Scotland way, employs a couple of people and doing very nicely indeed, and it was him who is coming to add the extras. As for me erecting a pergola, I think I would have more success at doing an engine swap in a car!!!

As yet not here and not yet done although hopefully after Easter sometime. Snow (bl00dy weather) and fuel (bl00dy tanker drivers/Unite) permitting

Regards

i'm not as bothered by many on this forum about fuel consumption as much as i am convenience.

i managed london to disneyland paris (via dover/ calais), and back to calais on a single tank. after having a car which only did 200-220 miles on a tank, it was a refreshing experience!

Although, my average fuel consumption is generaly not very good, I did drive as economicaly as possible with my D5-aut the last 700km (mixed use, city and highway traffic).
It is very well possible to fall in the range : D5 AWD - 33 to 45 MPG (US 27-37) 8.5L/100km - 6.3L/100Km (measured at the fuel station)
Nevertheless, it takes all the fun away of having a D5. I have choosen the D5 to have some extra acceleration in the traffic. Unfortunately it is noticed in the fuel consumption when using this accelaration.
I wouldn't have bought the D5 if I didn't want to feel the power sometimes.

Continual MPG about 34-35 is not too difficult to do for us with an XC60 D5 AWD, everyday driving of just poodling around the villages, dropping off kids and shopping in town with the occasional long drive to ‘God’s Waiting Room’ on the coast to see elderly relatives. The MPG would be a lot better if it wasn’t for me enjoying the mid-range overtaking grunt especially on the hilly sections of the southern A34, long runs can easily see above 40 MPG.

Thanks for rubbing it in....

My D5 is brand new, but just wheezes into the 33-45 group due to mostly driving out of town. When I tried a fill up with the super diesel the tank took £99, so the £100 tank fill will be the next milestone (or is that millstone?)

On a trip to london and back keeping the car at 68mph I did 44mpg. However, on a recent trip to the continent fully laden with my wife nagging me to do at least 130kph I was looking at 35mpg. This was done on Cooper discoverer m+s 2, winter tyres, 4 passengers and a boot full of suit cases. The D5 is economical providing you drive it accordingly!
