Performance upgrade 182 to 205
Hope I have the engine prefix right. I am not aware of the codes.
Basically I have a new XC90 D5SE Lux auto 2011my on order. The dealer wondered if I wanted them to upgrade the power from 182 to 205. Cost £650. What I want to know is: Is the extra power worth it, does it hit the mpg and do I have to inform my insurers, especially as it brings the engine in to line with the XC60 and 70? |

I too have a 2011 SElux premium on order and have gone for the upgrade.
Awaiting delivery and have checked with Volvo direct insurance and does not effect the premiums. Cant comment on performance or mpg yet! |

I believe Volvo dealers will put the Polastar upgrade onto your car to try, and if you don't like it they just remove the softwear and you pay nothing. The XC90 I test drove had it fitted, but having had my XC90 (2011) for over two months I've found the performance to be OK without the upgrade.
You are meant to tell your insurers about it. Some don't like it. If I were you, I would do a few thousand miles with 185 hp and then try the 205 hp. Even with the upgrade, the engine wont perform like the twin turbo D5 in the XC60. |

Thanks. Car not due till late October. Will discuss with insurer (Direct Line) beforehand.
May end up not going for it as I do not tow and am not a first away from the lights merchant either. Appreciate comments though |

It would be interesting to hear what your insurer (Direct Line) says about it.
In fact, if everyone who has had or is thinking of having this upgrade could say what their insurance companies said about it I'm sure everyone would find it interesting. If there are any insurers reading this, it might be your opportunity to gain some custom from XC90 owners who also may not be a "not a first away from the lights merchant ". |

Direct Line could not quote me as car not due for over 30 days. Will update nearer the time. Other drivers' comments would be interesting too.

"More Than" insurance told me they would not be able to insure me if I added the "performance" upgrade.

Direct Line won't insure anything with engine power mods now for new customers.
