Is this just an XC90 issue? Does it affect early S/V90's??
Does seem that it needs to be shouted about. I doubt, or its unlikely Volvo manufacture the ERAD/Charge system. Does anyone know the actual manufacturer?

Across all T8 powered frames it would appear

It was (and probably still is) manufactured by GKN.

Has the ERAD fault been solved yet , i was thinking about getting a T8 but after reading part of this thread i'm not sure. Does it affect all T8s , is it high mileage and all manufactured years ?

Doubt anyone really knows, probably only GKN, they sell millions of these edrive units over a load of brands I can't imagine the failure rate is that high in reality, just seems concentrated here because people visit forums when they have an issue.

Volvo launched ERAD2 for MY18 which means only XC90s and very early S90s are at risk of issues with the earlier part.
The ERAD was developed by Volvo with GKN and Siemens, the latter being the motor supplier. Common issues with the earlier ERADs were the clutch packs (giving a hesitation on engagement or no EV drive - this issue produces DTCs relating to the Inverter Electronic Module (IEM). Other issues are noisy bearings in the motor part of the ERAD. That is likely the responsibility of Siemens as it's part of their motor section of the ERAD. ERAD2 had countermeasures to resolve both of these issues. Countermeasure parts e.g. clutches and motor assemblies are available for earlier vehicles and for dealers to rebuild rather than replace the ERAD in its entirety. TBC if Volvo has issues service instructions and parts to allow just the bearings in the motor to be replaced. ERAD (1) and ERAD2 use a Siemens SIVETEC MRS 3601, max power 65kW, max torque 240 Nm. max rpm 13,000. ERAD3 was a launched for MY22 T6 and T8 PHEVs, higher max power 107 kW and higher power 309 Nm. Volvo is now making it's own electric motors in house. First models with those are the Model Year 23 XC40 and C40 Recharge. As is the case for all vehicles from all manufacturers and all faults, people tend to only post about them on forums when they have issues. Give a distorted view of the number of cases vs the total production number. Only Volvo, GKN and Siemens know the true failure rate of the first generation ERAD. Overall with the first vehicles in late 2014 (as MY15) and the countermeasure ERAD2 from MY18, and with first failures on higher mileage cars from say 2016 or this moved quite quickly through the noting of the issues, assessment, root cause analysis and countermeasure launch by mid 2017. As will all issues, the failure rate is key to how big an issue this actually is. |
