According to the information here:

http://www.volvopartshop.com/usb-and...ace-1881-p.asp

It only supports "MP3 non-DRM and WAV" via the USB interface.

The iPod adapter works fine with AAC(MP4) files.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Based on this i will stick with mp3.

On the subject of the order of the tracks i still cant get it to work. I have plugged the usb in to the pc, sorted by name rather than date created put it back in the car but still the same result. The car seems to sort by date created rather than by alphabet, irrespective of how the usb was last sorted when it was last plugged in to a pc.....

Thanks to this thread I finally figured it out.

I too was suffering the "loads of tracks, no folders" issue, but how on earth did we miss hitting enter to get the folder list?

So, THANKS everyone.

It's been a bit of a saga to get the car up and running for music anyway...

I have my entire music collection (approx 350 albums) ripped to FLAC for playback via a Squeezebox (streaming network player) on the hifi at home. Of course, FLAC is rather unwieldy for portable use, especially when my phone has no microSD slot (Nexus 4). So, some time late last year I had a computer transcode the entire collection of FLAC to OGG for portable use. That transcoding took the machine about 3 days of solid crunching to achieve.

So, then we get the volvo, and discover that the audio system doesn't understand standard free, open formats like FLAC and OGG but yet it DOES recognise proprietary, licensed formats like MP3 and WMA - madness that I do not understand.

The long and short of that being that I had to transcode the music collection once AGAIN, this time from FLAC to MP3. I used 160(min)-320(max) VBR mp3, and the entire collection is around 28GB, so fits nicely on a sandisk cruiser fit 32GB, which is also so small that it is unlikely to come to any harm in (as its unlikely to get knocked and damage the socket).

So, it took a bit of effort and back and forth, but we're up and running with it now.

In mine, the USB port is located inside the CDs storage space under the driver's middle console armrest. I have not used it for audio/music yet, but with my iPhone it works like a charm.

Hi Guys,

I have tried to find any info everywhere with no success. I have new shape 2007 XC70 with CD changer and only AUX port. Is it possible to fit usb port into it without too much hassle or only lovely volvo guys with gentle brain damaging quote can help me?

There is a kit available from Volvo, I think the kit +installation+software update required is about €500 at the dealers. Give your local dealer a call.

Also note you can switch album folders from the steering wheel controls. Press enter and you see the folders. I think it's the forward arrow that steps through a folder at a time and the back arrow that jumps a page? At a time.

I would also advise to use one or both of these parts. This will reduce the tension and wear on the usb plug.

Surely best to use a low-profile stick that avoids getting bumped?

This is the one we have, although in 32GB form - they've now released the 64GB, but I'm not sure yet if the car will recognise that big...

My old V70 2010 came with a short adaptor lead , so that you don't damage the USB socket.
It was in a sealed volvo bag , I will hav a look and see if I can find the volvo part number tomorrow.
That said I have a short USB drive , so don't use it .
Our newer 2012 xc70 did not come with a lead , or the last owner lost it.
