Sorry maybe I wasn't clear - I meant exactly what you said - it has to cut in before you start turning, if it cuts in after you start turning it's too late (as you found out). If it cuts in in a straight line then when the abs cuts in and releases the brakes there is no stress on the tyres meaning they regain grip, whilst turning, even through there is no braking stress on the tyres there is still a great deal of turning force meaning the wheels will not stop sliding.

Hope that clarifies things....

Hope you enjoyed your hols.

The sensor needs to read a signal , therefore you may have to clean the part that the sensor picks up on , or even replace it , expensive as it could mean a cv joint .

The ABS system senses when a wheel is about to lock and appropiately shuts off that wheel by holding prssure , then increasing it as it decelerates , then letting off pressure , exactly why you feel "modulation" through the brake pedal and also sometimes a solid pedal . When turning a curve, the available grip produced by the tyre is now asked to provide cornering and braking grip which it cannot do therefore the brakes are let off to allow some manouvering ability . It matters not if you are turning or straight ahead when the ABS is applied the system deals the best it can . The physics of the system due to road conditions and coefficient of friction regard 20% tyre slip as the max braking potential , its obvious the tyre must be allowed to do less if manouvering . In simple terms the ABS may not be reacting as quick as you would like or you have set the vehicle in such a way that the slide was not apparent during braking , something that can occur in safely designed vehicle . If it wasnt you were going too fast for the conditions !!!!!

There is a known fault with the Teves 20 ABS ECU fitted to 96-98 850 / 70 series cars, usually comes up as right rear sensor fault.

I have no experience of them but the following may help

On any system I have experience of, if the ABS detects a problem with any one of your four wheel sensors you will have standard braking on all wheels and the warning light will come on and stay on. You need to clean all your pick ups on all your wheels and the sensor areas around the hub too as your problem could be anywhere.

ABS will work whatever the steering angle applied to the front wheels - if one is having trouble into corners under braking then it's understeer and not an ABS problem. Taking/shorting the bulb out on defective ABS is an old trade trick, especially at auction. Very rare for the dash warning light to just fail (in my experience with ABS).

Good luck with it, have spent fortunes on ABS faults over the years and generally main delears have never fixed an ABS problem for me first time round.

Well I sorted the bulb..... it used to work, just must have gone for some spooky reason - I checked things like that when I bought it (always check the toys :) ) and all the warning light worked and so did the abs, tracs and all the other gadgets (that pleased the garage when I tested the racs & abs - not!)

It has had and intermittent tracs fault for a month or 3 - this makes me think that there is a problem with a front sensor.

Hey ho, now there is an annoying abs lamp lit all the time (why did I do it??) the car goes in on Thursday - wish it luck !
