Cat too turbo bolts D5 undoing.
Hi guys, I am having real trouble getting these bolts undone had a 4 ft bar on them and snapped my socket, they are on,y 10mm heads.
I have been looking online for a torch set and have seen some plumber versions or I have seen a mini oxy acet kit. The plumbers set looks a bit large to get into the space which is £87 inc gas, the mini kit will be over £100. Just wondered how you guys have taken these bolts out? Gary

On a bolt that size, in reality I would be on the impact wrench now as the constant impact tends to jolt them into coming off. I would be most concerned at getting a 4 foot bar on them as it’s likly at that size you will round the head off. If they were really that right and you had tried the above methods I would be giving serious consideration to grinding them off although I Must say I have never had to. Give the penetrating oil a go first. Personally I would spend the money on a battery powered impact wrench from Dewalt or such. |

the only thing with grinding off (or powerfiling through it if access is limited) is considering the other side ..
if it's a 'loose' or nomal bolt i.e. you're holding it with a spanner then that's easy to push it through after you cut the head off the near side if it's a captive nut or threaded hole then you're still left with the remains of the stud which is potentially even more awkward, more cutting then drilling then maybe re-tapping or welding on your own captive nut.. ballache if the head does start to round off I've had some success in the past with these type of sockets, hammer on a bit and it bits into the head of the bolt as you try to undo https://www.bes.co.uk/irwin-bolt-gri...ion-set-16924/. with regards to small torches dremel do a small one https://www.robertdyas.co.uk/dremel-...kaAlwOEALw_wcB but as to whether it gets hot enough and the gas lasts long enough to help I couldn't say. it's certainly got a very accurate pointed short flame.. I mostly used to use it to light fags when I didnt have a lighter to hand lol Last edited by stuart bowes; Sep 12th, 2022 at 01:08. |

+1 on an impact gun, my Clarke 240v has never been beaten but weighs several tons and is quite long.
