Default Oil level trouble - I think its a service error...

Got my xc60 D5 serviced yesterday at my nearby ford/mazda/volvo/skoda dealer. I started worrying when they had never heard of 3 yr free servicing and didnt believe me until they managed to find it on their system.

Driving this evening up a hill and "engine service required" lights up. I got home and did a Microsoft restart but its still showing. Checked the oil level and it is above max on the digital display. Guess the highly skilled technician has put too much in.

Not sure what to do now. Don't want to waste a 30 mile round trip of my fuel for their error, nor do i want to have over oiling damage my crank seals etc etc.

Is it unreasonable to insist they collect it on a transporter? I have a feeling the service manager won't understand when i phone tomorrow. Perhaps i should ask them to put in writing that they will cover any engine/gbox/emission control failure in the next 3 years if they think its fine to drive a car with too much oil? That may focus their mind.

Any advice?
Thanks

i don't think it's unreasonable to ask them to collect the car to sort it. i doubt they'd take it on a pick up. might do if they're an above average dealer though. in any case, they must sort the problem. draining a bit of oil should only take them 5 minutes. they might even be able to send an engineer to yours to do it.

give 'em a call see what they say, and then if what they say isn't to your satisfaction, ask to speak to the dealer's manager or chief exec. if still no luck, mention you'll have to refer the issue to volvo uk.

My previous 2010 indicated the same thing, but a manual dip check confirmed that the level was OK. It could be a sensor error? Whatever the dealer does, don't let them tap out oil before manually checking the oil level

phoned them this morning. They sent someone out to my house within the hour and have drained off back onto 80% on the dipstick so all is now good.

Mechanic said the D5 holds alot of oil in the head and need a long time to drain down. I had a while U wait service and they obviously hadn't allowed long enough for all the oil to drain out before re filling it.

One to remember for next time...

how much oil did they charge you for ? You are looking at about 5.8 litres

was a free service so i have no idea. Not specified on the print out.
If i had paid my own money i would be asking for a discount now its diluted slightly with the old oil.

Same thing happened on my V70 D5, service required on way home. Excuse was that there's been some "fix" and sump full level is now about 75% of what it used to be and they'd either overfilled or screwed up the software. Whatever...annoying 40 mile round trip to fix it though and they did eventually say sorry.

This also happened on my V50 D5. Took it back to the dealer who told me it was happening a lot by non franchised services. Mine had been done by the dealer but not at a Volvo garage.
