Volvo 850 GLT auto 2.5 10v
My car for sale. It’s a nice motor. Happy to answer any questions. Not sure why it’s saying Imported Vehicle. It’s an original UK vehicle

Quote:
My 850 is a 1997 car, it spent the first two and a half years in Germany where the original owner worked on a military base there. When it came to the UK in 1999 it was registered as Year of manufacture 1997 Date of first registration October 1999 There should be a Type Approval Certificate with the vehicle which states the vehicle is a parallel import and conforms to the Type Approval for UK cars

Hi, thanks for the info.
According to my paperwork it was bought here but registered in Germany. Then brought back 7 months later. Likely a Services personnel’s car. Would this class it as an import?

Why would it be bought in the UK and first registered in Germany, surely with the huge savings available to Military personnel in Germany it would have made more sense to be bought over there.
It is possible it was bought in Germany and stored for 6 months before being brought to the UK to be sold. At one time buying in Germany and selling in the UK was a lucrative business as the savings were massive. It only took 2 or 3 cars bought and sold to allow 'one' to get a 'free car' and plenty jumped onto that bandwagon. In the 70s and 80s it was a free for all but the laws changed in the 90s for these sort of transactions where the original purchaser had to keep their new car for 6 months before being allowed to sell them on. Garages, lock-ups, driveways in the German barracks were stuffed full of brand new Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes, Audis until their 6 months were up. Car dealers in the UK often paid the train fares back to Germany and everyone made a lot of money...

That makes sense. The original warranty, which I have but not the original receipt, states it was supplied by a UK Volvo dealer but all the paperwork for the first owner is a German address.

Was it Nato HQ Mönchengladbach by any chance?
Most likely a UK Volvo dealer bought the car when it was 6 months old

Might want to change the advert to a 1996 vehicle so that nobody can say you're trying to scam them

Very true. To be honest it didn’t even register that it was the wrong year.
