Default Rattling noise from dashboard

Hi all

After months of hearing this rattling from the dashboard, I've had enough and am going to get to the bottom of it.

I tried to take a video with sound but could not pick it up on the phone.

The noise is coming from the behind the dashboard - glovebox side. It's coming from somewhere above the glovebox.

What I've done with no success

Emptied the glovebox
Tightened all the screws I could fine at the bottom of the glovebox
Remove speaker cover on top of dashboard
Remove passenger side door panel (to exclude the sound traveling from the door)
Remove the passenger side dash AC air outlet trim

Don't know what else to do except to take out the dashboard. But after reading this, it's not an easy task to do!

I am truly hoping someone can come up with any suggestions besides taking out the dashboard or any ideas what is causing this rattle.

Thanks!

I had an annoying rattle from the dash and it turned out to be one of the metal spring clips that hold the air filter casing together was not clipped on and vibrating on the engine bay. Does the rattle change with the revs?

No it does not change with the engine revs. And I've checked the clip, it's fine.

It comes with road vibrations. So on a bad road it's noisy. But on a smooth road such as on the highway the rattle won't appear.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Could even be a coin or object that fell in the vents.

That may just be it. But I gather to check the vents I still need to take the dash out?

You have probably already eliminated this, but in my T4 the glovebox lid itself rattles. Wedging a piece of card in the top edge of it stops it...while I work out a more permanent solution.

It could be something like a flap on the blower assembly thats come slightly loose

I have exactly the same problem on my XC90 2009 D5.. I can go for weeks without a noise then, for no apparent reason it starts again.. it’s not like a rattle but a hollow tapping noise like a ping pong ball bouncing against the underside of the dash above the glove box.. I’ve spent hours on this and it’s becoming an obsession trying to find it..

I suspect it’s a cable clip or similar that’s come loose and going over a rough road causes it to tap against the dash or top of the glove box. The next step for me is to set one of those inspection cameras in above the glove box or down from the vent and have a look..

It’s a real shame as by his is probably the best car I have ever had and is in otherwise mint condition.. if you manage to sort yours let me know and I’ll do the same.

Not sure if this helps...
I had a creak from the dash, drivers side, the complete dash assembly is held in place by four 10mm bolts that are only accessible if the scuttle in front of the windscreen is removed, once removed I found 1 bolt slightly loose but needed to remove wiper linkage to get to it.
Problem solved...
