I have just replaced the tensioner on my 2.4 Petrol (5244S) non turbo. This tensioner does not have the locking pin referred to in Cheshire's video for the Diesel. However, I'm not sure it would have helped me anyway. Once the tension is taken off the belt with the Torx bit, it is fairly easy to slip the belt off the PAS pump pulley.

At least one of the lengths is wrong. Length makes a bigger difference than you might think. Only one way to find out.
There might be a lock for the tensioner. I find it fiddly on the D5.
I find it easier to fit the belt to all the pulleys except the top one, power steering. Push the tensioner back carefully and the belt should slip onto the top pulley easily enough.

I went to fit the belt today. There was an empty bolt hole where the idler pulley should have been. It had come off and was at the bottom of the engine well. Bearing seized and partially disintegrated, but the belt-contact surface is in good shape.

Just ordered a new one from local parts shop - €54 (€58 ex-VAT from dealer, and the guy kept talking about the tensioner pulley, "no, this is the idler pulley, it's nothing to do with the tensioner"). Collecting tomorrow morning. While I had the covers off, I figured I'd try unloading the tensioner pulley - wasn't as tough to unload as I'd expected. Couldn't see any form of locking facility, but I'll just get my son to hold it while I route the belt - good for young lads to see that there's not really a lot of magic or mystery to this stuff. He was with me today, amazed that I was attempting the task with no more training than asking questions on a forum and watching a youtube video. In fairness, he does know that I've tackled some light mechanics stuff through the years, and he knows that I'll get pros to do what I'm not confident of pulling off.

Can anyone advise me on the torque setting for the idler pulley bolt, or direct me to where I might learn it? Volvo parts guy wouldn't help me out with that. As Haynes famously doesn't doesn't cover the D5252T, I'd have presumed it safe to go with the same setting as for the D5 that is covered by my Haynes, but that only gives a figure for the tensioner, nothing for the idler.

Four pics attached: the routing diagram for the belt, with a red ring around the pulley in question (just to confirm I have all the nomenclature correct), and three pics of the actual pulley from my car.

Thanks again guys.

I don't know what the torque is but iirc the D5 screws came with thread lock compound on. Worth checking out if VAG do the same.

Your auxiliary belt tensioner bolts have a torque setting of 40 Nm. The bolt for the idler pulley to the right of the tensioner has a torque setting of 25 Nm.

This is proving to be frustrating, as usual with this oddball engine.

Got a lift to collect the part this morning. Turned out they got in the tensioner pulley, not the idler pulley. The pulley looked similar, but the bolt that came with it was nearly double the length of my bolt.

They're struggling to identify the correct part. He thinks he's got it right and will have it Monday afternoon.

I'm struggling to find the part on Parts for Volvo, Mr Auto & Mick's Garage. Seems it might variously be called idler pulley, guide pulley, deflection pulley...

Anyone on here in a position to help me out with the Volvo part number? That should allow me to get the correct part.

The specs of these pulleys from Mr Auto (for my reg number) are a match for my pulley (76mm diameter x 26mm thickness), but (like the bolt with the pulley in the parts shop this morning) the bolt pictured with them looks way longer than my bolt (45.6mm long). My bolt is scored on some threads, and I wouldn't use it again. I can see that the end of my bolt is good (not sheared). The longer bolt would place the idler pulley maybe 1" out from the mounting hole in the engine casing (rather than flush to the casing, as I imagine it should be?).

For reference, the specs of the tensioner pulleys Mr Auto lists for my reg number are 76mm diameter x 24mm thickness.

Thanks again all.

Your version of VIDA is newer than the one I have Chesh. Currently I'm using 2014B. It's likely that Volvo have updated the part numbers. I did check the D5252T diagrams to get the above part numbers though.
