If it lost water and overheated badly then all sorts of damage could have been caused, but I imagine you would have spotted the temperature rising anyway, so that seems unlikely.
My first guess would be that some water was sprayed around by the fan and got onto the distributor and the HT electrics. I don't think air can be the problem - I've never found these cars temperamental regarding cooling air locks, unlike some. I'd get the radiator fixed, refil, and give the plugs, distributor and coil a good clean up and then see how it is.
Good luck,

Once had a top hose go (not on a Volvo, admittedly, my 240 favours awkward heater hoses when it wants a dribble) which drowned the distributor and stopped me dead long before overheating set in- I favour the water sprayed on electrics as your chug problem diagnosis too.

Best of luck

Default radiator causing misfire?

hi there folks, here's my problem, about a week ago i was driving along and i heard a kind of ping hit the front of the car, it was quite loud, and i stopped immediately to see what it was, i lifted the bonnet, nothing looked broken or out of place so i carried on, then about 5 mins later, the car developed a kind of mis-fire, or a "chug" about every 10 secs or so, it seemed strange, but as i was going straight home, again, i thought nothing of it, had another look, nothing, no hoses loose, exhaust fine. then today, when dressin the car up, i took the front grill out and noticed there in the middle of the radiator quite a biggish? (about 1 1/2 insches long) dent, some of the fins bent, and a bit of water seepage. i don't know how it happened and it wasn't like that before, but i'm just wondering if this could be the problem with the "chug" could air be getting in to the cooling system and causing this? any help and advice greatly appreciated.
