Highly unlikely to be the sensor , have you fault traced it? Usually broken wires where the loom bends ..

mate used his very comprehensive diagnostic
tool and this was the only error. there was two bad connections in the area, sorted those but still no go

Have you checked continuity of the 2 wires from ECU to sensor ? wiggle the loom whilst checking ,where it bends every time the roof goes up and down ..

there were a couple of wires badly connected before and after the sensor - looks like sensor was replaced and wired badly - fixed these and it still wont work. I will carry on checking the wire down to where the boot folds back

Hall sensor 3 on mine (the yellow button) diag says sensor shorting to earth. Could that be a broken wire? Can’t physically see any obvious splits, but not sure where to look.

Unfortunately pressing the yellow button disables the roof, and I have to work on the car outdoors!

Yes more than likely the two particular sensor wires bare or broken and touching .
