Headlight leveling sensors
Hi, I don't have a problem yet in that they still seem to work perfectly but a look under the rear of the car for ' things to sort while the weather is nice' revealed a potential problem with the headlight leveling sensors of my 06 XC (with xenon headlights) One of the sensors feels seized and has the connecting rod almost rusted through whilst the other sensor seems fairly loose - also with a rusted connecting rod. Vida says voltage low on one side but OK on the 'loose' side.
Hopefully I'll just need to fit new con rods and refix the loose side but in a worst case scenario how difficult is it to change these sensors on an XC and are they as fiddly to change as they appear due to access? John |

The level sensors are simple potentiometers, not handed, They just work opposite way round - up down or down up depending upon side.
It is a simple job to remove the sensors - remove 2 fastenings, remove the cable from harness, refit..... However in the real world... Each sensor is held by 2 fastenings ( can't remember torx of bolts) I do remember them being a PIA to get them out. Access being the main issue. Once the unit is removed getting the wiring off the harness, made removal of the unit seem like childsplay. The rods are probably the easyist bits - small nut/bolt on one end, and ball joint on other, not cheap from Volvo. Best advice is to soak EVERYTHING you think you need to remove in good penetrating solution. ( I use transmission fluid/acetone 50/50) Good luck. Cheers Bob |
