1998 Volvo V70R AWD Propshaft compatibility
Hi,
My 1998 AWD V70R is missing it’s propshaft and I need to refit it. Does anybody know if the propshaft from a V70R phase 3 with the 5 speed auto will fit? Alternatively does anyone know of one for sale with the bolts? Many Thanks |

Hi Steve.
Unfortunately I don't have enough post to reply to your message apparently? The last owner said it was removed for reliability purposes and I have checked over the viscous coupling and the rear diff and all seems OK...but they only way i can really tell is to bolt the prop on..... I get the reliability thing with removing the props on these but unfortunately you are left with a car that simply cannot put the power on the ground and will just spin given any use of the accelerator. Maybe an additional mod to go with removing the prop would be to blank the turbocharger off! haha. Not sure its that sensible to put my VIN up publicly but if you know of a way let me know as i am definitely interested and in need of one. Thanks |

Hi aaron,
It would be good to know. I have a couple of Phase 1 AWDs. Note that there are two versions of the centre bearing for those (1998 vs 1999). There is a difference in the spacing between the bolts that mount to the body. This should match the spacing on your car. Otherwise the shafts seem to be compatible between 1998 and 1999 but I haven't tried. Looking at Phase 3, the other thing to check (as well as the length of the two prop shafts) would be the number of bolt holes in the CV joints and the outer diameter of the CV joints, to be sure that you can bolt it up to the flanges at the front and rear. If you are thinking of changing the CV joints at some time, you would also want the number of splines and the diameter of the splined prop shaft ends to be the same. Presume also the spline profile. I dont have a Phase 3 shaft so I can't comment on any differences. If you look at specs from components from rebuilders such as https://www.driveshaftparts.co.uk/ or https://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk/ you might be able to work out the differences. A rebuilder would be able to tell you pretty quickly. HTH Steve

thanks for that info Steve.
That's a big part of why I also thought a new prop would be easier - turned out not to be the case! Hoping it fits this time around otherwise its going to have to be rebuild my old one or source a second hand part with decent centre bearing etc! |
