The reason I want to turn them off is that the full beam doesn't work with them, you have to switch over to fully on for that, plus if I switch to sidelights I don't get a warning if I leave them on
I personally don't see the need for dipped beam DRLs and I think sidelights are more than enough for that purpose, which is to be seen by others
Full beam works with my 2003 with the DRL's on. (For flashing) You can't turn it on permenantly, but why would you want to in the daytime?

I don't want to use full beam in the day time, but i dont want to have to switch the lights between dipped beam, then side lights, then on to dipped beam again on a dark road at night in order to use full beam, in case I forget that dipped beam isn't actually switched on, I drive more than one car and also this car doesn't give a warning if lights are left switched on.
I just find all that a tad inconvenient to say the least

So if I decide to switch to sidelights they can pull me over because I'm not running the dipped beam DRLs???
Why have the side light switch then?

You can't legally drive with sidelights only at night anyway, so why would you need to switch from them when they shouldn't be on alone anyway? At night the dipped beams have to be on.

For parking. It's a legal requirement in some places when the car is parked on a highway at night.

Because the sidelights switch is in between DRL and dipped beam switches , so for example I am driving at night, I have DRL on dipped beam, I want to use full beam which invloves switching from DRL to sidelights, then to dipped beam again before I can use full beam.
If my DRLs were sidelights only, then I would conciously switch to dipped beam as it gets dark.
I understand fully what you are saying & I'm not arguing with you, I gues I will just have to live with this inconvenience for the sake of it.
In the mean time, I would like to thank you for all the advice which is all good & I don't wish to come across in a bad way

Parking lights are normally only required on one side of the vehicle & that would normally be switched via the indicator stalk, at least it is on every other car I have driven / owned

had mine turned off by Donalds of ipswich cost £54, i thing the MOT regs for the DRLS only applies to the new reg cars that have them fitted from Feb this year, they are a bespoke DRL not a sidelight and head light that is fitted to the car as standard, all mine has done is just turn off the Automatic headlights on all the while, if i leave the headlights on when i switch off they go off, sorry for waffling on
I have also had a look at the new 2012 XC Drl they replace the fog lights on during the day as soon as it gets dusk they swap and the headlights come on, not sure if you lose the fog lights ?????? have been looking to try and retrofit

The XC90 is equiped with a twilight sensor, so it should be possible, in theory, to operate the lights automatically in low light, wouldn't know how to do this though
