Default Very rough cold starting 2002 D5

Hi all, this is my first post to the forum =]
I've owned my 2002 V70 D5 163bhp for the last 7 years, its covered 70,000 miles and have had no problems with cold starting before. However recently when its first started in coldish weather it runs rough for at least a mile and returns very poor economy whilst its cold according to the OBC. Once it warms up its as efficient as normal and runs fine.
Ive had the glow plugs changed and its been for an oil and filter service but this hasnt helped.
The car is kept in a garage overnight as it always has been so I have no idea whats caused this problem. After searching the forum Ive found a few things I guess that it could be but I was wondering if anyone had a better idea?
Could it just be the fuel filter or is it something much more costly like an injector or the MAF ( is the MAF and IAT integrated as I cant seem to identify the IAT)?

Many thanks, Colin =]

i would do the fuel filter, then have a leak off test on the injectors.

Thanks Mike, I'll do that=] . Is it easy to do a leak test yourself or is it worth taking it to a local mechaninc? =] If it is an injector problem would the injector need replacing or just the seal? I know there had been a lot of problems with the 2002 d5 injectors but i had hopes (touch wood) that as it'd been ok up till now it had dodged the bullet.

do the fuel filter first and see if that cures it, then i would do the leak off test just to rule out the injector's.you can do the leak off test kit yourself but see what it would cost at a garage before trying to make a kit up. this is one i did of mine last year.there are reports that the injectors can not be refurbished due to the cailbration and those that have had it done have had diesel knock, the injectors are classed on top of the injector is a number in a circle ,1,2 or three if any are faulty you have to change with same class
hope that helps.

Thanks for the picture and the advice, I'll order a fuel filter and see if that cures it, I'm hoping that theres no need to replace the injector =] Is it a common fault to get these cold start issues, as the engine always starts without a problem which I though was odd considering it runs so poorly when cold and yet its fine once warm?

it can be if the injectors are not working, you have said that 2002 was not a good year for injectors. i take it there the original, when they first had these problems they would change them a set at a time to the cost of the customer even if one injector was faulty.

I think youre probably right that they're original, theres no mention in the service history for the 2 years before I owned it of the injectors being changed. Will change the fuel filter tomorrow and let you know the results, Thanks, Colin =]

I tried chnging the fuel filter today, unfortunatlety it didnt make a difference so im assuming it's one of the injectors sadly.

It may be worth checking the tank lift off pump, but it dose sound like an injectoe fault.
