Default XC60 intermittent screeching noise when driving.

Hi All, this is my first post.
My 2010 D5 AWD XC60 make a horrible screeching noise intermittently while driving. See attached link https://youtu.be/CYTdlQ7rkS4. This happens in gear and out of gear. I can have journeys where it’s not there at all and others when it comes and goes.
Initially I had a noise from the back end and ended up replacing bearings in the rear diff and the haldex unit. The noise in the video is since that’s been changed.
I’ve checked the wheel bearings and it’s not them.
Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like a bad alternator or clutch pulley on the alternator.

Although, you also mentioned that this noise started since the work was done on the diff… that could be your problem. I doubt it though… definitely sounds like a bad alternator or alternator pulley.

I’d refrain from driving the car with this noise. If the pulley snaps, the belt can come off & derail the cam belt, which could destroy the engine. Get this fixed ASAP!

Wot Kev said ^^^^^ dry bearing in the alternator.

Also - try turning off the A/C to see if it makes a different to volume/tone. Could be bearing in clutch pulley?

A/C is off in the video, so the noise isn’t A/C related.

Thanks guys. I’ll look into that tomorrow. It’s something I never thought of. It was hard to pin point the noise. Cheers

It doesn’t matter if the AC if off, the compressor clutch pulley is still spinning either on or off. But if the noise is coming from the a/c clutch pulley bearing, you usually notice a slight difference in tone if you cycle the a/c off and on.
