Yikes that does seem steep, are they fabricating new outriggers from scratch?
I would have thought about half that, Grinding off the old outriggers and welding in new repair sections or just box section shouldn't take that long. If they are making from scratch they will probably charge a small fortune regardless of how much work they actualy do. Was there much scratching of chins and whistling through teeth, thats usualy a bad sign !.

guy seems OK - Carcraft in Edinburgh - maybe too thorough. didn't mention whether outriggers would be fabricated - are they available?

I know a guy who used to do up mini's for a living, will ask him. Surprised there aren't more responses!?!

IIRC, outriggers are available from Brookhouse Volvo, who can supply most parts & panels / repair panels for Amazons: http://www.classicvolvoparts.co.uk/

To give an idea of bodywork repair costs, I recently paid £900 for both front inner wing tops, new outer sill, new front passenger floor & new front passenger outrigger. This included panels, paint, and all dismantling & reassembly (esp front wings & in the engine bay).

£480 for both outriggers sounds very expensive imho, but if they're fabricating the outriggers properly (ie to the correct shape rather than just putting in any old box section), it could be a fair price. Also depends if they're having to repair the adjacent chassis rail, floorpan & inner sill areas.

It's in Stamford Brook, west London, so probably a bit too far from you. The same place used to do all Tony Barrett at South Service's bodywork repairs & painting before Tony moved to Braydon Motors. In fact my car will be back in there soon to have a few other bits sorted out, but that's another story!

Smile Outriggers- the truth..

Hi Baz here,

If your floor pans are sound, you can remove the outriggers completely, and it will then pass the MOT!!

Not advised, but a way round it - i've seen it being done..

Our riggers are cheap from Brookhouse, and I could do the work for a fraction of that (usually £15 an hour, you bring the parts and pay for my gas, grinding blades and underseal- or know a bloke near me that will as well Bristol Based). The issue is whether where the outrigger attaches to the inner cill or ladder (box section/ chassis that runs the length of the car). If they are rotted here they are well fiddly as have to reconstruct these areas first before putting in new sections. In my experience (and I have done a few!) there is always hidden rot in these areas and it ends up being a complex job of fabrication.

Straight; weld in outriggers - that is expensive... fiddly fabrication and shoring up of related areas under car - probably about right!!

Good luck

Baz
