i would like to fit a stereo, any advice?

now i have my car running smoothly i would like to perhaps fit a discrete stereo to the car,whilst keeping the old one in the dash.
i feel that the power needed for a modern stereo and speakers may be too much for my 1966 122s 1.8l. it has a dynamo.

any advie on what to do , if its even a good idea would be a good help.

I would get an alternator conversion anyway, even without the question of stereos. It will give you peace of mind come winter when you are using all your equipment. Then the stereo's draw won't worry you. I saw a nice unit recently that used the original Volvo radio and linked it to an mp3 player under the dash where you could connect an iPod etc.

Try not to cut into the doors to fit speakers.

I had to invest in quite a lot of soundproofing (floors, firewall, bonnet) to even begin to listen to my stereo on the motorway.

Hi,

I have a 66 122s on a dynamo and have a cd player bolted to the floor under the drivers seat (shh don't tell anyone!)

I have put a speaker behind the parcel shelf and another under passenger side (where the single speaker was supposed to go).

I put in an electrical receiver inside the car (back of bulkhead) and wired the lot up.

I had someone break into a car in the past just to steal the cheap stereo I had installed under the dash (they could crane their necks and see it!)

Therefore under the seat is great,

I have a remote set of buttons so I don't have to reach under - apart from on and off - and away you go.

Unfortunately my girlfriend has found out how to use it and I sometimes get 'busted' at full pelt! (ps she is above the age of 12..)

PS haven't had any probs with the dynamo over the last 3 years - just get yourself a good battery (and not a cheap one!!) and make sure the generator / regulator is allowing a good charge.

I have put a 'stealth' stereo in the 131..I put a small amp in the boot between the shocker posts, built a little parcel shelf speaker box behind the back seat which looks factory,( with a pair of 6x9's in) and then just ran a single cable for my ipod down to between the front seats.
From outside the car you can see nothing, cos there's nowt to see. i just remove the ipod when I leave the car. All together cost less than £100.

I put my header unit under the dash below the oiginal where the screwholes won't show and put 2 X 220w speakers under the seats and a 200w sub in the boot, 1964 122s 30amp dynamo. no problems in the uk all winter, daily use car
