And then look at the pictures, he is saying its only the bumper that is damaged but the boot and trim is also damaged which will explain the £1500 bill.

That was a different bump I think. From what I gather they wrote it off due to the bumper initially. Still, even with the boot lid bump I wouldn't class that as a write off.

look closly at the pics and the boot damage is directly above the bumper damage.
If the boot damage is seperate it will still effect the value of the car as the assessor will look at all damage on the car to work out if the car is worth repairing imo he is lucky to get offered that much for it.

Agreed. That is a 10 year old BMW 3 series. It's worth considerably less than the 58 plate Volvo in post 1.

Age matters.

Oh yeah I'm well aware of that. I'm still placing my bet on them writing it off though unfortunately. As others have said often after removing the bumper the structural damage can be pretty bad and quite worrying in terms of repairing/being safe again + insurance companies generally don't give a s**t and will do what's easiest for them.

Hope it gets saved though, it's a lovely looking car. I guess the fact the air bags didn't go is a good thing as that would have cost a fortune.

One would hope that they would pay you at least as much as it would cost to buy a replacement car of similar age and condition (I mean, condition before the accident, of course).

If they do, then maybe consider visiting the local dealer and looking at the used cars they have going...

Having seen one of Volvo's crash test cars at the Brand Centre earlier this year during the T5D5 outing I can understand how the outside appears so "normal" but underneath is a different matter. This is an S40 subjected to a similar incident:

The crumple zone is quite something to see and, apparently, the Ford Crocus is nowhere near the same level of engineering in this respect. Nothing intruding into the passenger cell even though the front crash bar has moved backwards by a considerable margin.

thinking that was an S60 for a moment, I nearly said "but the whole car looks like it's been squashed in on itself!

Maybe that's what all S40s actually are, in truth. They're just S60s that have been in an accident.
