how many thin wires go on to your alternator? If you disconnect it / them does the light go out ?
I have had trouble with a few of these , the regulator goes faulty , it all works ok except a problem in the regulator affects the warning light . The regulator is the part the brushes fit into . I bought a complete one on e-bay for £12 still going strong ..

there was a recall years ago were a large fuse was fitted in a L shaped housing, worth checking this is not blown, but if its charging approx 14volts its ok,also worth checking the earth to the engine,if all ok looks like a faulty alternator.
