Found it! Looks a proper pain to access. Where does it run to? Looking at it the pipe is a cotton braided line, looks ok but that’s only glimpsing with torch. Replacement looks tricky or is there an easy way in?

What you should be seeing is a nice new small right angled rubber union going onto the manifold. It’s shown nicely 6 mins into the video I linked above. This connects to the pipework , (foam sheathed), that routes behind/under the manifold and joins the snakes' wedding at the PTC valve on the intake hose just before the turbo, (the unions/hoses here should be rubber as well). Just check that the rubber piece looks and feels ok and is tight on the manifold with its spring clip in place Hopefully it's ok but if it's split, let me know and I'll post how to get in there. If this is cotton braded line, I would question the garage that did the job as they won't have used OEM standard parts. You’ll find that most Volvo parts are well worth the extra outlay as the quality is so much better than aftermarket.

The 5mm line that runs from the base of the intake pipe from the airbox by the turbo runs from the outlet there and runs to a nipple outlet at the from of the block just under the inlet manifold by the idle control valve next to the brake booster connection. There’s a good vacuum on it but from what you are saying it’s not connected to the correct bit. I’m curious where the hell the braided line goes now! The fuel pressure regulator is connected correctly and goes to the “tree”. Any thoughts? |

Hi,
Interesting indeed! I've attached a couple of pictures I hope are helpful. The various vacuum systems are confusing. There are only 4 outlets for the external PCV system to check and only 3 you can get to: Left side; 1. The rubber elbow on the left side of the manifold that appears to be a braded line in your case - see attached picture of mine for what should be there. 2. The other pipe at this end goes into the oil can hidden out of sight under the manifold. Right side: 3. A pipe with a larger rubber open elbow that joins onto the top of the PTC valve with a hose clamp/ jubilee clip. 4. A pipe with a smaller rubber elbow that attaches to the small tube on the side of the PTC valve - mine has yellow/green tape on it in the second attached picture. That's it for the PCV. The rest of the snakes do other things. Your main engine vacuum at the tree sounds good (easy test is if your cruise control works) so I would double check the connections 1,2 and 4 above for a good seal, especially 1. Do the glove test whilst playing with the connections and see what happens. The other part I would check is the PTC valve. It slots into the intake hose so you can pull it out to clean altough it's a little fiddlier to get back in. If you buy a hose clamp or jubille clip, you can take off both PCV tubes, which makes it easier. Mine was quite clogged and the electrical contact inside was dirty. BR. |

My quote of “… The 5mm line that runs from the base of the intake pipe from the airbox by the turbo runs from the outlet there and runs to a nipple outlet at the from of the block just under the inlet manifold by the idle control valve next to the brake booster connection.….” could be wrong! The outlet from the side of the turbo runs to the nipple off the engine block I believe. The PCV 5mm tube runs alongside the engine but then disappears around the distributor area, admittedly I’ve not had a proper look.
The other nipple connection goes towards the radiator and into a valve (?) of some sorts?? So where does the other end of the braided/ right angled pipe supposed to go? |

The 4 connections I mentioned are the ends of the 2 PCV pipes that run along the engine under the manifold. The elbow/braided end is the other end of the yellow/green marked pipe in the photo that joins the PTC valve. The other 2 ends are on the pipe that runs from the oil box to the PTC valve. They both run under the distributor. The tree and the other nipples run other vacuum dependent systems. One is the cruise control that lives under the battery but this supply should be direct. The one I think you're talking will need someone else's input.
If we've confirmed that what should be a rubber elbow is a braided line, I would recommend going back to the garage. |
