V40 Door locks.
Wife has a 2012 V40 T4, purchased June 18. So far we have had to replace 2 lock mechanisms, & last week a 3rd door refused to open. however this one has decided to correct itself for now. The 2 locks were done by a local specialist with no damage to door cards. Volvo have known about the problem since day 1 & extended the warranty to 4yrs. They were not interested in our case. We,ve been put off newer model volvo,s by this, its an expensive fix with potentially 5 locks to replace.

Rear Passenger Door Lock - A Known Problem
My XC90 rear driver side passenger door will not open. I've been told by the dealer that this is a known problem, and between Guildford and Leatherhead dealerships they have had hundreds of 'door lock' cases within the last couple of months.
As it's a "known problem", I was hoping that Volvo UK will cover the cost completely, but they have only offered 50%. This is because of the mileage apparently. Very disappointed. We were recommended the XC90 by friends locally, 2 out of 3 of us have now experienced multiple problems. |

This happened on my 2014 v40 cc D2. My door opened again about a week later on its own. I've taken the card off and sprayed tons of silicon grease at the lock. Touch wood it's been fine since. I found this brilliant walk through too https://www.flickr.com/photos/186289...57712503278052

Volvo XC40 Cross Country - rear nearside door locked
Had the same problem as many posters on here. I hadn't appreciated just how many were suffering what is a pretty serious design fault. Surprised Volvo continued to use these mechanisms year in year out knowing full well this is a safety issue.
I followed this link which proved very useful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TjMw6ORydA The removal of the panels and the door card was relatively straightforward, except the torx 25 screw in the door which is very restricted by the middle post between the front and rear doors. I used a torx tool with a 90 degree angle and aligned it vertical to vertical if that makes sense, as this seemed the only way to remove the tool. However the screw is relatively flexible so you can get a straight torx in at a bit of an angle. Disconnecting the speaker and windscreen wiper connectors is very easy - the blue one at the top and the grey at the bottom. Disconnecting the door cable is more difficult and care is needed not to break the plastic clips. The really difficult bit is poking around the hole to try and reset the door latch - took me almost 45 minutes to get it to trip open and even then I wasn't sure it had worked. Once released though it is easy to reassemble everything with the door fully open. Applied loads of WD40 to the lock and through the hole at the latch. Larry |
