Hooray, left the car unlocked outside the MOT garage and it passed its MOT so I guess they never noticed it!

I spent yesterday afternoon pressing all the buttons and spraying with WD40 and it did work a couple of times but not consistently. I also found it doesn't unlock from the interior door lock button which stays lit but the door still opens from the inside fortunately.

That's bought me a bit more time if it doesn't go to WBAC first.

ha! Excellent.

I have took the risk and researched & purchased a used lock assembly lock from a Volvo/SAAB breakers (from a 3 year old newer car) N/S/R lock - for a bargain £50.

Matching OEM numbers to mine etc, so was careful to match my VIN.

My mate mechanic is going to have a go tomorrow to diagnose the original one, then if not fit this one.

Part arrived this morning, all looks fine, from what I have looked at online for new ones - there is an etched FORD LOGO on this actual lock plate, so looks to be VOLVO use the same lock as FORD.

Will report back if fixed....or not

So just to update this - and bring this thread to an ending.

Breakers part - didn't work, completely locked up the door, so both interior and exterior it was locked! Great!

Same issue, the lock was faulty mechanically like my original one.

So, ordered a brand new part from my local Volvo dealer, £205+VAT

My mechanic refitted it last night, all works great - did this very quick, was impressed, even with the door locked shut, so worked inside the car!

I am glad this issue has been put to bed....get a 12 months warranty with the Volvo part, so fingers crossed it lasts the course and forever!

A silly silly thing to fail, in all my car ownership, never replaced a lock failure!

I still haven't got the rear drivers side door fixed and now the front passenger door is starting to go the same way. These things really are rubbish!

The replacement has a waterproof rubber cover now ... improving the FoMoCo one ! having said that the locks are almost identical on nearly all recent makes .

Just a thought, I've had a low battery charge message for the last 12 months but the car still starts and drives fine.

Could a weak battery cause these faults? It does sound as if the lock tries to unlock but then clunks shut again. A new battery would be cheaper than 2 new locks. The car's going in November so I don't really want to splash out on too much at this point.

and a reasonable car charger would be cheaper than a new battery!

I would say buy a battery charger and charge the battery up and see if it works (if you are able as all depends as may take a while to get the battery up so the charger says its full)

I had no 'stop start' for ages and battery saying low charge. charging it up and using the car for longer trips and after a while it all went away, the car was not used for a while before i aquired it and it appears that the car couldnt charge the battery enough during the runs, it just 'topped' up rather than an agressive charge a dedicated mains charger can do.

Dont know if it will fix the locks, but should help with the battery at the least.
