On my last car I used to have a really useful feature of traffic announcements if I was approaching a an area with traffic problems.
This would happen automatically even if I wasn't using the car's satnav. The announcement would be something along the lines of, "Traffic disruption on M40, average speed 40mph". I'm sure I've read somewhere that the Sensus nav is capable of doing the same but I've never heard these announcements. Has anyone made this feature work?

My Sensus system, from 2012, never says anything about traffic, but messages are shown. If I do navigate, then it may suddenly show that the traffic situation has changed, and asks about if I want to act accordingly.

So I think I've made some sense of this after two long motorway drives today gave me the opportunity to understand the Volvo Sensus (lack of) traffic announcement capabilities compared to dated satnavs of other marques.
I managed to get voice traffic announcements ONLY if I have a route active in the satnav. In this case, the Sensus satnav will give me a summary of nearby traffic issues. It won't announce any traffic issues if you don't have a route active. However, even this capability is next to useless as the traffic issues it will announce are on roads that are not on my route. It appears to use a capture window on the map to locate traffic issues to announce. Overall, the Sensus navigation is acceptable, but is SO far behind that of other marques that it defies belief.

My 2015 sensus works well with traffic warnings, changing the route to avoid jams and flagging up delays in red or Amber. It also warns of delays audibly to let you decide whether to divert or not, giving average speed and delay time
The score is 4-2 to the sat nav in deciding to divert or not, it saved a huge delay at the channel tunnel by first diverting me onto the A20 and then finding a sneaky way into the terminal from the south. But not so hot in France. As you say, you have to tell it where you are going, it can't guess your destination. |

Mine diverted me up a motorway exit slip road onto the high level roundabout and then back down the entrance slip road back onto the motorway. I suspect some of the jammed drivers on the motorway thought I was a pushy BMW driver in a Volvo!. I think with the traffic diversion suggestions, you either have to trust the thing and always do as it says or you could be second guessing it all the way.
