Default D5 158kw 2015 tapping/knocking sounds

Hey eveyone, I'm trying to understand what is causing a strange noise in my 2015 V70 D5. This is my first D5 and i have no previous experience with them Maybe someone could comment if it sounds normal? . With a cold engine there is a noticeable rhythmic tapping sound that is best heard from inside the cabin. It quiets down after warming up but never fully disappears.

They are not the quietest of engines anyway.

May be worth checking if you have a vacuum leak anywhere. If so the vacuum pump can be noisy.

Checked the vacuum lines. All seems good. Disconnecting hoses doesn’t change the sound much. Only knocking under the oil cap gets loud with the hoses off. Also checked the vacuum with a gauge and its stable with no fluctuations. (Checked both vacuum lines, to the vacuum reservoir and to the egr)

I've also replaced one injector that seemed noisy. No change, been moving injectors to the next cylinder, so far no change. (Always coded too)

I'd leave it but as its a diesel and noisy by nature but its the only one of my vehicles that has a distinct noise audible in the interior and i find that annoying. I have other 4cyl diesels and while they are much louder outside, all you hear in the car is engine rumble. No tapping or anything.

I have found similar sounding engines on YouTube.

Also to anyone suggesting lifters. I had them changed out at the beginning of the year along with all the belts and associated.

No change after the change so that is probably not the issue.

Hi Martin,

I have the same engine with the same problem.

I have started the thread in June so you can check it if you haven't already.
I am about to replace the engine as it is driving me nuts, but it would be nice to know first what is a cause.

Please let us know here if you find a solution.

I'll let you know if i find anything. I have read your thread and everything sounds the same except the ticking in mine almost disappears when warm.

I haven't had much time to diagnose it, but i've talked to people and found somebody who was chasing a similar noise on a XC60. After replacing many things it turned out to be a very small leak between the head and exhaust manifold.

Will try to listen to the manifold with a stethoscope this weekend.
