Gone for 0W-30 A5/B5 in the end, it seems the most likely oil type for my S60 due to it popping up most frequently in searches, and most recommended by you guys.

the official bllcks was that anything with "severe use" should use the 0w30
both my T5 have had sticker saying use 0w30 a5b5 on the slam panel.

5w30 is fine too and probably cheaper

5w-30 is fine instead of 0w-30 but pick the A5/B5 grade - manual says grade over viscosity. While 0w-30 A5/B5 is the spec for our 2.5T (as on the decal on the bonnet) the manual gives operating temps for 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30, 5w-40 all of which just about cover the British climate (actually today the only one out of spec is 5w-30, which goes to ambient 30 degrees C - all the others go to 40. The temp in London is 31 now. But other tables show 5w going to 35 degrees and indeed 0w down to 35).

Confusingly the manual also has another table that lists the same petrol engine variants with a higher oil volume (5.8l v 5.5l) and lower grade A1/B1 and 5w-30 spec.

Which all goes to show that the primary goal is to have enough reasonably decent oil in it and if it's only going few miles a year as ours is it's not a big deal.

Thing is I've just bought 0W30 A5/B5, would I still be able to use this in the B5204T5 engine?

I'm answering my own query here. After a bit of research I have found some interesting info, and I would be grateful if any of you can confirm I'm correct please.

ACEA A3/B3/B4 oil, whether it be 0W30 or 5W30, was specified by Volvo for S60's between 2000 and 2004, with a service interval of every 12k miles. This changed to ACEA A5/B5, 0W30 or 5W30, for S60's from 2005 onwards, with a service interval change to every 18k miles.

As far as I'm aware the B5204T5 engine didn't change between these periods. It looks like the higher specification oil was introduced just to extend service intervals. So the conclusion I have come to is that there should be no issues using the A5/B5 oil in my 2004 S60.

As I said I would be very grateful if any of you guys can confirm my findings and thoughts on this.

yes the long and short of it is that A5 has the same features + extended drain interval.

ie its better and last longer

if you definitely have that engine code then you have the later engine anyway (grey coil plugs + longer spark plugs) uses a5 b5

I used both 5W30 and 0W30 and in my humble opinion the engine works slightly smoother and quiter on 0W30

Yep, definitely what it says on the sticker located on the timing belt cover.

Cheers for confirming!
