My 1994 440 with a B20F engine has developed an oil leak which appears to be coming from the bellhousing - probably the rear crank oil seal I guess? The engine has done ~ 150k miles. Has anyone replaced this seal, and is it best just to take out the whole engine/gearbox to get good access? I am tempted just to leave it as the leak is fairly minor - just a small mark on the driveway after each run,

I don't know if this is any use to you but I have a Volvo OEM crankshaft oil seal (3287542) which I was going to put on eBay with a couple of bits intended for my 480. Bought from Seymour Horwell (ex Volvo dealer) in May for £18. You can have it for £8 including postage if it will fit your car. Rob |

A further question on this unresolved problem - has anyone experience of removing or replacing the crank case breather on the B20F engine? I think this is the cylindrical item attached to the block on the RHS. I'm just thinking that if this breather isn't breathing properly it could be a cause/factor in my oil leak? If I could ensure a negative pressure inside the crankcase I might get less oil leaking out.
The breather looks to be just a push fit, but it is very tight and doesn't move at all. Any thoughts welcome, Ian F. p.s. it doesn't look as if any of you have replaced the rear crank oil seal! Thanks to Rob for the offer, but not sure it would fit. |

Re it being hard to move ... mine is extremely rusty where moisture has sat under the foam at the front of the engine, so I looked to get a replacement from breakers. I've now decided to leave well alone as they've all been ceased / rusted on.... |

I'm interested in this, I think mine is leaking from the same point
![]() Maybe worth a post on 480 club forum? The same engine was used on 480s (mine is a 2.0) and it has a wider viewing than the 400 section here. Steve ![]()
