Replace the power steering suction hose
Hi All,
940 - SW 2.0 Turbo (1997) For several years now, the suction hose has been wet at both ends, so I have bought a new genuine one ready to be replaced (P/N 3530083). I have also noticed that the fluid is brown, therefore I want to drain the system. I managed to buy 2L of Liqui Moli ATF1300 when I was in Europe last January and brought it with me (as I cannot find this specific one here in NA). Q1: Where is the valve to drain the system? Once the system has been drained, the next step will be to remove the hose and replace it. I am not sure if I will encounter any resistance, maybe not on the reservoir side, but possibly on the pump? Anyways, I will see. Q2: Is there any documentation available for this process? I could not find anything specific. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Alessandro

There are some useful tips here, although not quite describing the job you're planning to do.
https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Steering.html Note that it warns you about the barb on the plastic reservoir being very severe. You might do best to cut the old hose lengthwise with a sharp knife taking care not to damage the plastic underneath. Other methods that I have used successfully to help remove old, tight hoses (though not specifically power steering) are to use grips to twist the hose to loosen it and pour very hot water over the hose to soften it. Dipping the new hose in hot water can make it much easier to install too. Alternatively, try a bit of grease or power steering fluid to lubricate the barb. Good luck. |

Thank you for passing the link with the info.
I am going to replace the suction hose, which is the bigger one in diameter, is the barb on the reservoir for that hose too? Also, do you know where the draining valve is located? This evening I will try to see if I can spot it, because I'd think you drain the system first and then you remove the hose. Alessandro

Hi folks,
Just a quick update to let you know that I successfully replaced the suction hose. Luckily, I had the information you provided earlier, so I made sure to note the presence of a barb. I used a utility knife to cut 1" off the part the connects to the reservoir. The barb is quite tiny but very sharp and effective. First, I sucked out the oil from the reservoir with a syringe. Second, I disconnected the suction hose at the pump, which was easy. Third, I disconnected the hose at the reservoir. At that point, I had removed 0.6 L out of 0.8 L. The end of the new genuine Volvo hose (P/N 3530083) that connects to the pump is J-shaped. However, the original hose from 1997 is L-shaped (90°). I found this strange, but the new one is flexible enough and did not cause any issues. Please see the attached image of the old hose. Thank you all. Alessandro

having drained as much of the steering fluid as possible,it's worth,in my opinion fitting a filter to collect debris being pumped around the system.I imported mine from the 'states.
