I have a diesel V40 about 18months old. I have a recurrent problem where I get a message saying engine system service required. It has happened 5 times - the problem each time is that the oil level is too high - it is brought down to correct level but keeps happening . The technicians tell me this is normal in a diesel engine but this is the 4th diesel I have owned and it hasn'r happened before. They also said it maybe is because I drive it around town and not on so many long drives. Any thought s would be appreciated

Maybe your other diesels didn't have a particulate filter.
If your driving habits don't include a regular higher speed run, failed regenerations will increase the oil level. Read this...... http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=99488

You don't say what engine you have, although it is well known that short journeys cause dpf probs with diesels come what may. You need to do longer drives.I also recommend you 'drive hard'. Yes that is against the grain, but it does sit nicely with a modern diesel engine. (take no notice of others who say otherwise) Generally speaking a regen takes place once every tank full of fuel give or take, so as long as you do over 50mph, and ESPECIALLY over 2100 revs (3000 is better) you should be ok. People do a 'quick stint' down the motorway - although if your car is not ready for a regen, all that does is add to the problem. Trying not to be rude, but maybe a petrol is a better option for you. I say this because I have recently purchased a new V40 petrol for such reason, and yes, 35mpg is not great but no dpf issues round the doors, and as petrol is cheaper that is about 40mpg diesel talk....so I am happy. My D5 XC60 spends it's time on the motorway. Regards |

Does it have any fault codes stored for 02 sensor in exhaust by any chance,
Had a couple of 5 pot engines with similar issue due to faulty 02 sensor they were trying to regen all time and rising oil level as a consiquence
