Before I cleaned mine at 120k, the carbon build up had left me a 2cm hole at most, and `yes, it has stripped the gears on the ETM. That cost me £300 to replace alone.

Now, once a year, i give it a clean. Better safe than sorry.

I use carb cleaner and keep the ETM as dry as I can, avoiding soaking the cogs which i believe are plastic inside.

Just as a note, I've reused the metal spacer washer a few times without any issues. But will get one this year, just to be safe.

Thanks colinbos. Can I ask what the symptoms were of stripped cogs in the throttle module?

From my understanding, the primary role of the throttle on these engines is to close fully on switching off to acheive rapid shut down. In this respect everything seems to be functioning correctly.

My issue has moved on a bit now, the idle is fairly constantly 1500rpm unless I hold down the brake which gradually brings it down to 700rpm (over 10 - 20 seconds).
Sometimes it drives great (ignoring the tickover issue), other times it usually drives OK from standing start (ie responds to accelerator normally) but as soon as second gear or beyond is selected, sometimes it can take 2-3 seconds for revs to gradually rise to mach the speed (ie. change gear and there is a 2-3 second hole before power is applied!!)

All the above is pointing me towards a vacuum related issue so I'll be getting into that to diagnose this weekend, wether permitting!

Mine went into limp mode, and when i lifted the bonnet, you could hear a scratching grating noise form the ETM. When I removed the ETM, the EGR behind it was CLOGGED with Carbon, as was the valve of the ETM, thereby stripping the cogs inside it, as it couldn't move.
