Speedo cable
Today’s simple question, hopefully!
With a sticking speedo needle on my P1800 I decided I needed to lubricate the cable. An easy job for most people so I thought I’d have a go. Detached it from the speedo no problem. Added a little grease. Reconnected, but it doesn’t work at all. Is there an easy/ correct way to ensure it all fits correctly? As you’ve guessed I’m not a mechanic 🤣 Last edited by Simon703; May 21st, 2023 at 08:28. |

Grease and speedos aren't a good combination. What did you actually do?

Hi Derek, detached from speedo end, pulled out inner cable by about 12 inches and just added a tiny amount of graphite grease.(as per other forum comments).
I wouldn’t want to detach the gearbox end- is there a way of knowing it’s correctly seated at both ends? Last edited by Simon703; May 21st, 2023 at 11:16. |

If you pulled it out 12" at the speedo end it obviously detached at the gearbox end. You might as well pull the whole thing out and grease it. Rub in the grease and rub it all off again. A very thin coat will remain. Inspect carefully for broken strands. If it is not working at all it may have broken the sacrificial connector at the gearbox end. If that was intact and and the cable hadn't re seated itself it is unlikely you could have put the cable back on the speedo. Easier to take the cable off at the gearbox end but the inner has to come out at the speedo end due to the small collar.

To rule this off, cable was fine perhaps a little too much grease.
Got the cable to re-engage at the gearbox end but the needle was still sticking and lately when detached from the clock it was still registering 20 mph. Car has now been in for a service and the clocks (speedo and tacho- separate problem with tacho) removed for service/ refurb. Thanks all for input. |
