Question PHEV Cabin Heater

Hi
I'm trying to work out if a 2021 V60 T8 will heat the cabin with the aux fuel burning heater and engine off.
I can't see anything in the manual that says its required but I only seem to be getting outside temperature air without it turned on.
Does anyone know if this is the case?

Hi,

Yes you need it turned on in settings for it to come on when you’re using pre-conditioning. Note that you don’t need to be plugged in for it to come on but, in warmer weather, if you want to chill the cabin before starting you do need to be plugged in.

If you have an MY21 T8 XC60 as I do, for some reason the full manual in PDF form is not available in the Volvo Manual app. However, it is available on the Volvo website and this is covered in the manual.

Cheers,

Hi

I'm not so worried about the pre-conditioning but just the normal climate settings while driving around.
I would expect it to be a drain on the battery so maybe they don't let it do heating but in that case I would have thought the engine would kick in till it was up to temperature rather than just doing nothing.

It heats the cabin. So yes you need it on.

If you don't have the Aux heater setting ticked in the climate menu in the sensus/google auto control screens then you will only get outside temperature air into the cabin until you end up running the ICE.
The Aux heater uses very little fuel and warms up the cabin very quickly (it also pre-warms the ICE fluids prior to it being needed reducing cold start wear) so I keep it turned on pretty much most of the time unless I'm doing very short trips (moving the car in the driveway or going to the local shop).

Default Cabin Heating

Hi - I have had my 2021 T8 since March and with winter approching, and despite reading the manual and searching on here, I have been wondering about the following questions:

- if you have the aux fuel fired heater turned off in the climate settings in the carand only ever do a short journey in PURE without starting the main engine is any heat supplied to the cabin at all ?

- if you have the aux heater turned off in the climate settings in the car, but select Climate in the app does it then start the aux heater ? and if not, if it's plugged in does it heat the car electrically instead ?

I seem to have found conflicting answers.

To question 1 - I believe no heat will be supplied to the cabin

To question 2 - I don't know, but that should be easy enough to test.

2 - as I understand it there is only either an electric or fuel preheater. Up to and including MY21.5 (XC90 at least) the T8 for UK market (and at least some other euro markets) had a fuel preheater, MY22 and on for UK T8s have an electric preheater (as have certain other markets for some years, USA has only ever had electric preheat I think).

I would suspect that the car will preheat (fuel or electric) regardless of whether the auxiliary heater tick box is checked or not as they are different functions. Ticking the check box I believe only relates to using the aux heater, or not, whilst the vehicle is active / driven. This could be checked easily enough in parked mode, but if the car warms up it will be via the fuel heater if that’s what is fitted.

The check box is probably missing altogether on MY22 onwards I imagine.

Thanks for reply’s - So In answer:

Q1 - I drove for 20mins in pure today and there was definitely no heat with the aux heater off.

Q2 - later with the aux heater off in the centre menu, I started climate from the app, which fired up the aux heater and then warmed the car despite it being disabled in the car menu.
Will test tomorrow to see if when plugged in it still uses the aux heater to pre heat the car or not.

I am pretty sure - although not 100% - that if you have a petrol powered pre-heater then you do not have an electric one as well. ie it is one or the other, not dual fuel.
