That was a good video, thanks for sharing.

Skoda is definitely an alternative I'd consider. Maybe they aren't in the same league as a Volvo, but they're great value for money.

Not really relevant, a test between two cars designed 15+ years apart...

The vets we use for our equines are specialists and cover much of the North East - the all have a company Skoda 4x4 model mostly Superb estates but there’s the odd Octavia Scout and Yeti. They run them until there is a reason not to, either reliability or damage, they typically are in service for 5-7 years and 200 and something thousand miles. A couple of the vets have bought them off the firm for their private cars.

Both score 5 stars in the NCAP safety rating (V70 & Skoda Superb), but the Skoda is marginally better in terms of the percentage scores on adult occupant etc. The Volvo is the heavier car though, as you say. See the links below... interesting.

It's more to do with big and heavy isn't always safer. I'm aware that cars are a lot safer now than 15 years ago but you don't get to decide what car you are going to have a head on crash with sadly.

That's proven with the Skoda technically scoring higher than the V70 (adult occupant etc). Both have a 5 star NCAP rating, but the Skoda still edges it.

So there we go... a Skoda beating a Volvo in an NCAP crash test. Who would have thought.

I know the price of second hand cars have increased but the vehicle I started off looking at increases every time I go on their site. Started at around £17K is now just shy of £19K.
I always though cars got cheaper as they got older, not withstanding todays starnge market I think this a bit of profiteering, well would be if they sold it?

The V70 outperforms the Skoda in all the NCAP tests except the side pole test, where the curtain airbags deployed late - this drags the overall Adult Occupant figure down. As per the test notes, Volvo tuned the airbag deployment then retested, but it failed to deploy correctly again. This has always disappointed me that there was never any follow up, and I couldn't find any press release or any other explanation from Volvo as to the cause, whether they agreed with NCAPs findings, or whether they eventually resolved the issue. For such a safety conscious brand surely this was an absolute clanger of a result, but I guess most people just see the 5* headline result and don't read the detail. I did when researching the replacement to my '04 Avensis (another top scorer for it's time), and decided to go with an S80 instead, as the NHTSA tests from the USA didn't reveal any airbag deployment problems with it, despite being identical to the V70 in most respects. Copy of the V70 NCAP notes below, does anyone know any more about this - Clan??

However, in the first pole test, the side airbags fired late which prevented the side curtain airbag from fully deploying, and the car was penalised. Volvo were dissatisfied with the performance of the car in that test and developed a fix for the airbag deployment problem. Euro NCAP agreed to a re-test on the condition that all cars were modified. Volvo have implemented the fix in all production vehicles and have recalled cars, telling owners to get their cars updated by their dealers. Unfortunately, the same problem occurred in the re-test and again the airbag failed to deploy correctly.

there was a recall on the early new xc90's for new side curtain bolts ...

The NCAP score is a summary of many factors - including pedestrian safety, safety of occupants of other vehicles and driver aids, alertness reminders etc. It does not directly reflect only the protection that is offered to the driver and occupants of that vehicle, as highlighted in Ferg's post, and only reflects the outcome of tests in laboratory conditions.

I'm not for one minute saying the Skoda isn't a safe, formidable alternative - clearly it is, but for me it would regard the Volvo as the safer car from a driver perspective.
