Loss of power steering in wet weather
My xc d5 has suddenly got hydrophobic.
Any form of wet weather, the power steering craps out. I replaced the pump a few years back with a Meyle unit after the power steering died altogether. Then threw an auxiliary belt at it last year when I dropped the oil. Am I missing something else that might cause the wet weather to make the belt slip? |

You want to check both as soon as you can. If the car has never had a tensioner before, its probably worth replacing it. The aux belt can come off and can get tangled in the timing belt... that'll literally destroy your engine.

Thanks, I have partial service history, no records of it being undertaken by volvo.
It's on the asap to do list. I hate automatic tensioners... |

The 850 series were well known for this. It happened to my 854 Turbo as well, but only if passing through larger pools of water on the road. Water splashed on the belt pulley which started slipping.
Later models got a mud flap to protect against the splashing. |
