Default 1989 Volvo 740 inner tie rod.

Can anyone kindly throw some light on a problem I have with my faithful '89 Volvo 740.

My garage seems to have a problem getting hold of the correct inner track rod.

The rack end has a 18mm thread, & the other end is 14mm. Two local; suppliers have delivered one's with a rack end size of only 16mm. Others, given the correct measurements, have also been unable to help. Seems 18mm/14mm rods are difficult to find. It was suggested that I would have ton have a new rack!

The track rods are 305mm long.

I have trawled the 'net, but all rods are without any measurements.

Can anyone help me please?

Try Volvo to see if they can give you a part number. Then use autopartoo.com to cross ref to see if there are other manufacturers making them . I know that eurocarparts list 14/18mm but there 310mm long. Are you sure yours are 305mm? Mine are 305mm but 14mm both ends. Its a TRW rack.

Had a quick look for you on line and came up with the following. Volvo part 1359347. Put it into yoyopart.com and it came up with the following. Brand:VOLVOPart Number(s):1359 347ProductName:Axial RodFront Axle:Thread Size 1:M18x1.5 mmThread Size2:M14x2.0 mmLength:304.5 mm. It also lists equivalent manufacturers. Couldn't access autopartoo.com to double check but at least its a start.

Hope its of help

Default ECP - be wary

In real life I lawyer a bit and so far every time a garage client has had a problem with a part and I have had to sort it out it has been a part from ECP. I won't have ECP bits on my Volvos. I suggest trying Braydons

What do you mean by this? ECP don't make the parts.
They sell brands from manufacturers that I guarantee you will already have on your Volvo.

Default An example

Well, I'm maybe putting some new discs on my 960 and Braydons told me flat out that they do not get their discs from ECP, but from somebody else who make the bits for Volvo and one side of the factory ships ones branded Volvo but the other ones are branded something else.

Default Transmech

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Re...5a74a96&000069

That's a transmech clutch kit for a renault trafic. How does 16,000 miles before burned out sound?

And here is the bit about them being "exclusive" to ECP http://www.autosceneuk.co.uk/worksho...o-clutch-kits/

And as for the "no quibble" guarantee, hahahahahahaha. They said there was nothing wrong with it even though it failed to make the van go forward.

The LUK or Sachs ones are probably OK though.

AND they give the wrong spec and clutch for one of my Volvos, via their part finder.

That example isn't a Eurocarparts thing though. That would apply to any supplier of aftermarket parts.
If for example you buy Lemforder inner tie rods from Eurocarparts, they're the exact same Lemforder tie rods from any other factor.
I prefer genuine Volvo where possible but my Lemforder tie rods were £20 each from ECP compared to £90 each from Volvo and Lemforder make the Volvo rod.
It's worth saying also that I've never had an incorrect part from ECP but my Volvo main dealer supplied an incorrect aux belt tensioner despite having my reg, chassis and engine number which left me carless for two days.
Ask your man at Braydons who makes the Volvo brake disc and I reckon you'll find that manufacturer on sale at ECP.

My new genuine Volvo brakes discs were made in China.

The thing with motor factors is that you need to ask what make parts are before buying. You can get prices from two factors that are the same but when you ask what make the parts are one will say a well known brand and the other will be something you can't find reference to on Alibaba !

Going back to the original problem, it might be worth fitting a different used rack off something a bit newer. If the inner ball joints have worn then there is a good chance the rest of the rack will have suffered as well.

For any 'solid' part that's getting hard to source or silly money I always go and get an old one from the scrapyard.
Some scrapyards have a bloke who will remove such parts for you ... some do not.
