Default Air filter canister

Just cleaned the IAC and MAF on my v40, the IAC was filthy (120k miles and I guess it was never cleaned)
The MAF was fine, but there were some foam particles, seems like the foam inside the air cleaner canister was loosing bits, I ended up ripping it off.
What is (or was) this foam for?
Some kind of heat protector?

Never mind

Found out is just for noise, and the particles from the foam do clog the MAF, so good riddance..

What is smth?

The MAF with maf cleaner,The IAC with throttle body cleaner. On the canister the foam just came off and whatever glue was left with a product called goo-gone, then a good wash with soap and water.
