Default Oil Burn?

MY2005 Exec D5 163hp. I checked the engine oil yesterday and found the level below MIN.

The last MoT showed no smoke (.59/m PASS) and I can't see any blue smoke from the exhaust. No Leaks. So - where is it going?

How long since it was last changed. It shouldn't be filled to the max anyway and will always use a little between services. Mine will typically need a little top up (1/2 litre) in between services.
Although would normally produce a smoky exhaust - any sign of oil around the top of the intercooler rad' ?

Cheers
Ian.

The crankcase has a breath pipe that is connected to the air intake pipework. This is there to stop the crankcase from pressurising and damaging it self. The air from this contains oil vapours which is why you will always find oil in the pipework including the intercooler. This is where the oil tends to go and why it needs topping up between services. You should only be concerned if you are topping up more than the you were certenly no more than a litre between services.

It was changed at the last service, Jan 2013. I did notice a few days later that the oil level was not at max . I just assumed the stealers were pulling a fast one, charging me for more oil that they actually put in, so I topped it up. Perhaps that can cause more oil burn?

I'll bring it up at next service.

I think that there's a reason that they don't fill it to the max, I can't recall exactly but it's something to do with the oil level creeping up on the diesel engines due to burning diesel and therefore prevents damage to the dpf by high oil levels.... Clan will know and explain better than I
