2002 V70 D5 160k Service - Few Questions
I have taken my car in for a service at 160k miles this morning, my wallet isnt deep enough to suffer a Volvo service so I have taken it to a trusted local garage who serviced it last time.
Its all looking good appart from a couple of things:- 1) The locking wheel nut refuses to budge on the passenger side front (thanks go to the tyre shop who did the tyres a couple of weeks ago!). I have told the garage to get it off how ever they can and replace all the locking wheel bolts with the spares in the boot. Is it best to buy a new set of locking wheel nuts from Volvo or can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative? 2) It needs front discs and pads (musnt grumble the last set of pads have done about 25k and the discs havenet been changed in over 65k). 3) The lower wishbone bushes are looking worn - still ok apparantly but will need to be done soon. (will replace these myself eventually....) 4) I had a diesel leak in the engine bay which is my main reason for booking the car in. This showed itself as a large quantity of smoke coming from under the bonnet when stationary, lots of fun in traffic but probably not doing the mpg much good. This has turned out to be a loose injector - is this common? I think the garage have just tightened it up, will this be OK? Is a loose injector likely to cause other issues? (I have an issue with smoke under acceleration, even gentle acceleration - the intercooler and hses have been changed some time ago). Cheers! Sam |

I got rid of all the locking wheel nuts on my cars, especially the Volvo ones, they seem to be a source of constant bother !

Given that the locking nuts on mine were rusting and one shattered on removal at 2.5 years old, if you can live with the risk of theft, then I'd agree, take them off and do without.

Alloy wheels still get stolen , two weeks ago near the barrowlands market Glasgow mid sunday morning saw a vectra up on bricks which had just had all four wheels stolen as the owner was still away shopping , it was hard to beleive that where it was parked alongside dozens of other cars coming and going that anyone would have had the cheek and the car had not been dumped or the car stolen and moved to this position . In my own case one of the benefits of continually kerbing my wheels is that I cant see anyone nicking them as they look horrible but you never know .

As you can buy a socket from halfords to remove locking wheels bolts, anyone that wants your wheels will get them.
I bought budget "locking" bolts off eBay, like these. I don't think for one minute they'll stop a determined thief, but should stop an opportunist in a dark car park. They have the added benefit that a tyre shop will have to try really hard to break them!

Have you tried using one of those off the shelf tools? Absolute rubbish.
The only sure fire way to get locking nuts off is to drill them off with a huge bit and a powerful drill. Not the kind of thing you do in the street! Of course, as most people just leave the key in the glovebox, such extremes aren't required by most thieves...

Thinking about it I left the key in the glove box anyway, so I suppose there really is no need LOL.
I might just get a set anyway. Just out of interest a set from Volvo cost £53.86 including Vat ! |
