05 S60 timing belt
Hello, the book with my S60 tells me the belt was done 6 years ago (60k ago). I was just checking on the condition of the belt and it doesn't look fantastic to me. To you guys with more experience than I does this look really bad or change in the next thousand miles bad?
Thanks |

If you are talking about the transverse cracks on the back of the belt, our 03 D5 was worse than that when I changed at 9yrs 96k. I'd say that's normal.

How many miles on the car ? The belt can get much worse indeed, but at 60K miles with those tiny cracks it means it wasn't the best brand out there. Try to find out if the water pump was also replaced, worth looking with a flash light at the small hole above the pump for any leaks. My guess is the belt will be good for another 10-20k, but if looking to keep it longer is worth replacing it now. We usually replace the pump only with the second belt, unless a previous owner has already replacing it with a cheaper part - we recommend only Aisin for the pump and Contitech for the belt kit (be aware that full Contitech kits come with a Graf pump which is not recommended).

The belt on it has very faint volvo markings on it making me question if it was even done 60k ago. I guess I'll get the timing kit and change the belt for peace of mind, I have strut mounts and engine vac mounts to do so I may as well make a day of it. I really hope the water pump is OK but I will check it when in there. |

Belt Change
Its prudent to change both belts and tensioners, when your at it, using Volvo parts.

I would change the water pump at same time, peace of mind at 35 quid. Did my V70 2006 D5 with 161k on clock last week, belt wasn't in great condition. Full kit, water pump and aux belt changed.

If it's a genuine one, I'm pretty sure it was never replaced, a genuine one may still have little to no cracks at 100k miles. But it always depends on how hard the car is being driven, repeated harder accelerations cause the belt to wear faster
The water pump has a stamped date on it inside a circle the last two digits of the year (https://youtu.be/RNGo1TqzLlE), can see with a mirror. Go with an Aisin water pump, and you may also want to replace the thermostat while there. But what is very important for these D5 is the pulleys on the serpentine belt - all of them, including the A/C compressor one. If one fails, the belt will wrap around the crank pulley and the timing belt will skip teeth and will bent the valves. That's how most of these D5 engines die. Also google a bit about the swirl arm link
