Default Brakes

Hi all I’ve just picked up some new discs and pads for my xc90 due to juddering and shaking, the man said if you feel it through the steering wheel it’s the front and if you feel it through the pedal it’s the rear does this seem right I’ve never heard it before thanks a lot.

So you bought the parts based on what some man said, and now you're asking an internet forum if the verbal diagnosis and your actions were correct and justified?

My how the world has changed.... back when I was a young fella we actually diagnosed problems through taking things apart with tools and observing with our eyes and thinking with our brains.

No not bought parts on what some man has said bought them because they need changing,was asking what he said was true about the pedal and steering wheel.

You could feel front in peddle too but if just pedal and not steering then more likely rears.

There's a bit of logic to that, it is most unusual for a XC90 to wrap the rears.

Which make did you get?

I went for ferodo discs and pads as I had problems with Volvo pads before, I changed for Volvo pads and just over 12 months they started clunking when braking after forwards or backwards.

So went back to Volvo with the receipt and they wouldn’t help even though they were two weeks after being 12 months old, so I put ferodo pads in and problems were sorted so I have gone for them again. So will report back how they get on.

Hello Daniel

In the infrequent instance that rears are warped it is occasionally felt in the foot pedal but can also felt in the seat of your pants. You locate it easier with the car laden at the back to push some of the braking bias to the rear.

In the good old days of mechanical handbrakes a quick pull to biting point would identify a shimmy at the back and a pulsing in the handbrake lever

As a former Motor Factor man(15yrs) I would not rely on over the counter advice unless you absolutely trust the person. When I started in the industry you were sent on a basic mechanical course so you knew your brake disc from your clutch disc. These days due to the advent of computers anyone can provide vehicle parts correctly but there aren't many that actually practice mechanics to give them good knowledge.

As for the clunking, this will be either worn brake calliper hardware i.e. the tension springs/shims or more commonly poorly cut brake pad back plate allowing excess fore & aft movement. Don't forget Volvo don't make the pads, a brake manufacturer does ( such as ATE, BENDIX etc..) and then stamps them up as Volvo. I remember seeing some awful QC from major brake component manufacturers in the past.

If possible make use of a dial gauge to check run out when you fit the new discs. If the mounting holes make it that there is more than one possible disc to hub orientation then check run out on all of them. If you haven't access to a dial gauge then a marker pen on an axle stand, crude as it maybe, will provide a visual indicator of the best disc to hub mating position.

At least the weather is good for changing brakes.

Thanks for the reply the front discs are warped badly you can tell by running your finger over them and the lip on them, they look thin compared to the new ones when you brake it shakes the car and the steering wheel they are being fitted tuesday morning so hopefully all sorted.

Had the discs and pads replaced today, all sorted nice and smooth when braking just need to bed them in now thank for the replies.
