A bit more work on panel gaps, the NOS wing needed welding along the door edge, not ideal but much better now. Converted the battery tray to bolt in, some painting inside where welding has been done, vacuumed inside, clean and she's off to the painter tomorrow.

She's finally at the painter. I'll need to get on and get everything ready to go back on when she's finished.

Engine and gearbox cleaned and a good going over with wire wheels on the drill. Will give them both a further degrease and rub down before painting on the weekend.

Unless you are planning a gasket refresh be careful washing the grease crust off - that is probably what is keeping the oil in the engine . If you are doing the pan gasket, I like an application of Hylomar Blue or the Permatex knock-off just because pan gasket replacement is such a hassle. I use the Hylomar on just about every mating surface. The pan and valve cover gaskets are made from a material that appears to have been engineered in the early first half of the previous century

What, you're not painting yourself???

After all the work you've put in, I'd be Very, Very reluctant to have someone else spray the top coat.

This is probably a numpty reaction, as I've never sprayed a car in my life, but I suppose you just have to get the professionals on board at some point, e.g. You won't be re-chroming on a diy basis.

Good luck, cheers,
Steve

Well you could..............

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254887476123

It's replica chrome so no need for harsh chemicals such as arsenic, cyanide etc like with real chrome plating, just use a 12V supply (old skool battery charger is fine, use an old headlamp bulb to limit the current if you like) and follow the destructions.

I've often thought about getting that kit but i don't really have enough chrome that needs replating. I have had quite a bit of success making my own nickel plate solution and plating a few small things, doesn't come out that bright but i could probably polish it until it is bright and shiny............

Hi Dave,

Having viewed quite a few articles about re-chromeing, I think best left to the professionals. Whilst the process is pretty simple in theory, it's probably all down to the cleaning dips.

This is from the numpty that was de rusting some suspension arms a few months ago, but wired it in reverse so even more rust😀😀

Cheers

That's easily sorted Steve, give them a wire brush and then do it again with the connections as they should be, job's a good'un.

It's also a way of cleaning your sacrificial anode and the (very) basic principle battery desulphators work on.

No I have my 131 to continue with painting and restoring after the 142 is back together. There's a lot of hours in painting a car and just don't have the time to do the 142 also.
