won't go above 70mph
MOT yesterday - new shoes for handbrake and a new back box as previous one had a crack all the way round. Car fine - inevitable steering judder settled down nicely. However, on a Glasgow to Edinburgh run just now - on cruise control at 62mph/100kph - the car refused to top 70mph when I was overtaking. Switched off cruise control and same. Very slow to accelerate from 60 to 70 and would go no faster. Hoping it was some daft glitch with the cruise control and when I fire the Beastie up for the trip home all will be well....any suggestions?

Our Passat had an issue a bit like yours and it needed a new MAF. Also wouldn't rev above 4k.

The manual lists the following for low output, top speed: Injction pump - faulty, sucking air via fuel line or shaft seal, fuel line blocked, incorrect timing, throttle linkage incorrect, defective injector, valve clearances incorrect, blocked exhaust, air filter or fuel filter (water). Tests for the above are in the manual at k-jet.org. craig 8661 had the pump drive shaft seal problem.
You could start with the things which are simple and guaranteed not to make any difference, such as removing water from the fuel filter, or replacing it if it has not been changed in awhile and having a look at the air filter to see how bad a state it is in. The other relatively simple thing is to test the seal, done by gravity feeding the pump. After that it would be on to timing (if pre 93), testing injectors etc. jor
